Part 258: A Hostile Visitor

Karleigh swam easily in the ocean, feeling completely relaxed. She had been sunbathing all morning and as a result, felt a little overheated. A cooling swim was just what she needed. Karleigh then twisted to swim down the long access of the water, until she could have sworn she heard someone calling her name. She waded in the water and looked, until she saw Jilly screaming her name. “WHAT???” Karleigh screamed back, unable to hear her deaf friend.

Jilly was flaying her arms wildly. Karleigh was able to finally hear that she was telling her to get out of the water. “WHY?” the rich girl said, “I AM HAVING TOO MUCH-“

Karleigh then noticed the large fin swimming towards her on the left. “OH, MY GOD!!!” she screamed, as she started to thrash in the water.

Hal then leaned up from the checkers game he was having with Libby. The screaming had gotten the attention of the therapist. They both turned to see what was happening. Karleigh was trying to swim toward shore but she was panicking; splashing water around wildly. Hal blinked when he saw the fin near her. “Is that . . .is that a . . . “ Libby couldn’t form the words, realizing what she was seeing.

Hal quickly reached over and snapped off the blanket covering Danielle’s hunting rifle. He swiftly picked it up and cocked the breech to make sure it was loaded. “Can you hit that thing?” the therapist gulped.

“Doesn’t look like I have much a choice since we don’t have any spear-DUTCH!” the cop screamed as his younger companion ran past him.

The surfer ran past all of his fellow survivors gathering on the beach and then ran into the shallows of the ocean. The moment he was able to, he quickly dove into the water and began to swim toward Karleigh. The rich girl was flaying so badly, she was starting to drown. Dutch flapped his arms and swam toward her. He scanned the surrounding blue water but for some reason, the shark was gone.

Back on the beach, Hal got to the water and cocked his rifle. Then he saw John appear toward his right. The archer quickly slammed two arrows in the sand and got on his knees. He quickly pulled out one and pulled back the string toward the area the shark appeared in. “Can you nail that thing, John?” Hal asked.

“If not, I hope your bullet can make it.” The archer whispered.

Dutch swam as hard as his arms and legs could carry him. He realized he should have taken his shirt off to allow him to get to her quicker but he didn’t have time. He looked around and was starting to panic when he lost Karleigh. Then he finally spotted her, floating underwater with her arms above her head. The surfer then flapped his body and swam up to the surface. He quickly burst into the air and took in a massive deep breath. Then he jolted back down into the water.
He swam to the submerged Karleigh. The rich girl swayed limp under the water; her arms and pony tail floating loosely. Dutch then grabbed her and pulled her toward him. He immediately kissed her, expelling the air in his lungs directly into her. Karleigh’s eyes then opened as the air got her brain working again. The momentary stillness of water, allowed her to wrap her arms around Dutch.

He opened his eyes, glad to see movement. He gently parted from her and she held her breath. He blinked toward her and she nodded her head; signally she was okay. Then her eyes went wide, trying to hold her mouth. Dutch turned in just enough time to see the shark swimming toward them.

The surfer quickly thrusts his hands toward the watery beast and grabbed it by the nose; allowing the momentum to push him into Karleigh, and ram her toward the surface. Dutch then flipped and caught the shark by the fin and proceeded to ride it. He turned just enough time to see the rich girl have her wits about her and continued to swim toward the beach. The shark thrust right and left; trying to shake the young man off of his back. Then it turned and started to swim back toward Karleigh.

Dutch held his breath as it jerked around. The speed of keeping his eyes on her under the water was hard. Within seconds, they had finally approached her. The shark bore his massive maw of teeth to consume her but the surfer quickly grabbed it by the nose and squeezed. The shark started to slow down, enabling Dutch to fling his body toward her again. Karleigh screamed as she felt the surfer’s muscled back slam into her again. The shark quickly started to jerk around, unable to be sure where to go.

It then started to do a spiral and the young man held onto as hard as he could. The bad news was he was starting to run out of air. The temporary feeling of panic started to hit as his lungs felt like they were on fire. It allowed him to loose his grip and slide off the shark into the watery depth. He turned to catch his bearing and saw the shark swing around. It started to swim toward him and began to expand it’s massive rows of razor sharp teeth. Then a bullet pierced the water, missing it by inches.

Dutch’s heart skipped a beat when he saw the shark stop.

The beast blinked for a second, then expanded it’s jaw again as one of John’s arrows flew into the water, striking it on it’s side. The shark then turned and began to swam into the blackness of the ocean. Dutch’s mind was racing with the strangeness of the Island and how everybody how encountered something but not him. His time had finally come; he had witnessed a shark that seemed to be smart enough to know what a bullet was but he knew that was impossible. Then the burning his lungs brought him to reality.

Dutch swam to the surface and exploded, gasping for air. “DUTCH!!!” Hal screamed.

The young man saw his older friend waving at him from the beach. The surfer then began his swim back toward the sandy area. It seemed like it took more than just a few minutes but it could have been the strain of his muscles from saving Karleigh. When he finally felt the ground below his feet, he proceeded to walk in the direction of the beach. Hal ran out into the water and grabbed his arm, putting his arm around his shoulder; helping him toward the land. When they arrived, Dutch collapsed, catching his breath. He slowly leaned up and saw Karleigh sitting nearby, surrounded by Libby and her friends. She was hugging her knees, trembling like a leaf in the wind. “Are you all right?” Dutch asked.

“I . . .lost . . .my . .sunglasses . .” she whimpered.

Dutch then collapsed on his back and took a deep breath. “Sorry to hear it.” He coughed. Posted by Picasa
