Part 407: Welcome home, Kate
October 4th, 2009
John began to explain his plan the moment Locke arrived from gathering the supplies.
Most already knew the story of John’s sister’s death. She was playing hide and go seek in a junkyard, and made the mistake of hiding inside an old refridgerator. She eventually passed out and suffocated. She was at the tender age of 11. However, there were some facts that even Mia didn’t know, simply because John didn’t talk about it. His sister’s full name was Katherine Dana Riggs, and they called her Kate for short. She was far sighted so she had to wear glasses. At the age of 9, she was racing her bike down a street with her friend. However, she didn’t see the car coming at the other end of the street. The car managed to stop in time but Katherine hit it at full motion. She did survive the crash with only one minor injury.
A broken collarbone.
Kate then paused at the story and gently put her hand on her former broken collarbone. Mia looked at John then at Kate then back to her husband. “All those times during the leaving of the Island,” she whispered, “When you were curious about Kate’s broken collarbone .. .THAT’S what you are doing. Thinking about your sister.”
“Two girls named Kate. Two broken collarbones in the exact same location.” John leaned into his chair, “Coincidence . . .. or fate?”
“Oh, I’m pretty sure it’s fate.” Locke smiled his warm smile.
“That’s why this is going to work, Kate.” John said, looking at her, “The medical records will be updated. It’s already documented that Katherine had a broken collarbone and now you have the scar to back it up. All we have to do is wait on the Matador to update the records. You will become . . .my sister.”
“John,” Kate started to whimper, “What . . .what you’re doing . . .”
“What I’m doing, must be done.” John finished, and he got up, walking toward her, “You are not a bad person, Kate. You deserve the quiet life. You deserve to be with your friends . . .and your family.”
“Family?” she sniffed, “Thank you, John.”
Kate embraced the archer and held onto her. Mia wiped her tears a little; never more proud of her husband than at that moment. Locke was happy that they were reunited regardless. After they parted, Kate smiled and felt relaxed. More relaxed that she had been in a few years. “Okay,” John said, patting her on the shoulder, “We got to get ready for the Matador. I hope you don’t mind losing some of your hair.”
“No, whatever it takes.” Kate said, removing her jean jacket.
“Follow me, Kate.” Mia said.
The two ladies walked up to the stairs, so Mia could give her hair a trim. The phone then proceeded to ring. John walked over and looked at the phone’s caller id this time. It was their millionaire friend. “Hello, Hurley.” John smiled, “I hope I haven’t woken you.”
“No, dude, I was a hosting a Drive Inn movie party anyway,” he chuckled, “So what’s up?”
“Hurley, there’s not going to be any easy way to say this so I am just going to say it . . .I need five million dollars . . .NOW.”
“Is it for a good cause?” the big man asked.
“Yes. This five million will save the life of someone very close to us.”
“This close friend . . .who we talking about?”
“Kate.” John smiled.
There was a pause and Hurley then said, “Dude, why didn’t you say so? I’ll have my man get the five million to you in thirty minutes.”
“No, I don’t need it in case Hurley, I need a wired bank transfer.”
“Okay, give me the numbers.”
“The account number is DN38417-25364, it’s a bank in the Grand Camon Islands.” John said.
“Okay, Dude. I’ll get my man on it right now.”
“Thanks, Hurley. You are the best,” the archer smiled.
“So, Kate is okay? When can we see her?” Hurley asked.
“You can see her anytime you want but she’ll definitely be around for Christmas.”
John bid his farewell to their rich friend. Locke walked over and made sure the digital camera was ready. Then they heard footsteps coming down the stairs. Kate walked in, with a newly trimmed hair only toward her shoulders. Not to mention it was slicked back and wet. Mia smiled, showing off her new sister-in-law. John motioned for her to sit on the couch and she did so. Locke gave her the fake glasses, and she gently put them on. “This is going to take some getting used to.” She giggled.
“It worked for Superman.” Locke said, holding up the digital camera.
The bald man snapped off five pictures. Then he gave it to John who walked back over to the computer. He quickly dropped it off into a special outlet and using the mechanism; uploaded the photos to the computer. John snapped his fingers and slapped his hands together. “Now we wait.” The archer told them.
Mia walked back into the living room, holding up two cups of coffee. She walked over to the small office area and handed her husband the cup. She didn’t make any for Locke or Kate because both had past out. John sipped on the cup, and shook his head; trying to stay awake. He looked at the clock and saw that it was 2 in the morning. Mia pulled up a stool and sat next to her husband, leaning her head on her arm. “You are amazing you know that?” she smiled, “ After all these years, you’ve still got the knack to impress me.”
“Oh, so I’ve been boring you all this time?” He smirked.
She playfully slapped his arm. “You know what I mean.” She giggled.
“I try, baby. I try.” He sipped his coffee.
“Did you ever think your plan would ever been implemented?”
“Honestly . . .no.” he sighed, looking at the sleeping Kate on his couch, “ I figured she’d run till she couldn’t run anymore. I wonder . . .I wonder what made her come back to us.”
“She got tired of looking over her shoulder. She wanted to live in peace.”
“She told you that?” John smiled.
“In so many words.” Mia grinned, sipping her coffee.
Then the computer started to flicker. Mia caught it first and then John looked at it next. The screen went read again and the words flickers onto the main viewer.
THE FIVE MILLION HAS ARRIVED IN THE BANK. I’M IMPRESSED, JOHN. I’M NOT GOING TO ASK WHERE YOU GOT IT, BUT YOU’VE AGREED TO THE PRICE AND THEREFORE, I WILL HOLD UP MY END OF THE BARGAIN. WHO DO YOU WANT ME TO BRING BACK TO LIFE?
John typed in, “Her name was Katherine Dana Riggs. She was my sister. Her social security number is 555-89-7541.”
SEARCHING . . . .
John rubbed his chin and sipped his coffee. Mia stared at the screen. Then the words flickered on.
FOUND HER RECORDS. LOOKS LIKE SHE DIED SOME TIME AGO. EASILY FIXED. I’LL HAVE TO HACK IN THE FEDERAL DATABASE AND GIVE HER UPDATED RECORDS ON W2’S, AND A MINOR WORK HISTORY. DRIVER’S LICENCSE, SOCIAL SECURITY CARD, THE USUAL?
John typed in, “Yes.”
CURRENT PHOTOS FOR THIS PERSON?
A box came on the screen allow John to upload attachments. The archer pressed the button and uploaded the digital pictures he took of Kate. Within seconds they were received by the Matador. The words flickered onto the screen again.
PHOTOS RECEIVED. I’LL BEGIN WORKING ON THE FILES IN THE GOVERNMENT DATABASES RIGHT NOW. A FED-EX COURIER WILL ARRIVE IN THE MORNING WITH ALL THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS FOR HER TO BEGIN HER LIFE. ANYTHING ELSE?
John smiled and typed in, “No, that’s it. Thanks for your help, Matador.”
IT’S BEEN A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH YOU AGAIN. I HOPE ALL IS WELL. MATADOR, SIGNING OFF.
The screen flickered off the red, then back to the normal internet explorer. Mia sighed, finishing her coffee. “Is that it?” she asked.
“That’s it.” John smiled, looking at his wife, “ Kate now lives again, in both ways. I think she’ll enjoy the simple life here with us.”
“I know she will, John. I just . . “ Mia stammered, pushing her hair behind her ear.
“Just what, honey?” John asked, rubbing her back.
“It’s only a few more days till October 8th. Kate just came back but if she was the event, then she’s early. I don’t . . .I don’t understand.”
“I don’t know what to tell you, Mia. But I have a feeling . . .whatever the event is going to be, Kate is not it. Maybe she’s got something to do with it, maybe she doesn’t. But now, you got one more person to be here with you when it does happen.”
Mia smiled and stood up. She took her coffee cup and her husband’s coffee cup, then walked into the kitchen to place them in the sink. John stood up and stretched; yawning. It was technically Sunday so he’ll have a few more hours to get some sleep. He calmly walked over to wear Locke was sleeping on the recliner and turned off the lamp near his head. John then walked over toward Kate who was sleeping on the couch, using her jean jacket at a blanket. The archer then picked up a hand-woven blanket and gently covered her with it. Kate moaned a bit but accepted the covers none the less. John smiled down at her, filled with a brotherly pride he hadn’t felt in years.
“Welcome home, Kate.” He grinned.
