Part 234: Wrong Liberator

Belmont kept his foot on the gas pedal as they sped forward through the jungle. Pristine was continuously moving her hair out of her eyes as the wind struck her violently. Moe kept his eyes on the back road, just in case they came after them. Tony sat as still as he could be, holding Marita’s hand. His Latina girlfriend couldn’t stop crying; she was more certain then than ever that they were going to be killed once Belmont go where even he was going. The blonde man then pulled out his radio and handed it to toward the woman at his side. “Get on that radio and call The Rogue.” He ordered, “Tell them to meet us at Broadway.”

“They started their run a few days ago,” Pristine said in disbelief, “There is no way I will be able to reach them.”

“TRY, WOMAN!” Belmont screamed in anger.

Pristine grunted and took the radio. “Rogue, come in, this is Canary, over?”

“Let the Colonel keep his damn computer,” the second in command hissed, “There are other projects out there and I have had enough of this place.”

“Rogue, come in,” Pristine demanded.

Marita sniffed again. Tony then put his arm around her and brought her forward into his lap. She gripped onto his wrist, hoping for any type of comfort. The blind doctor stroked her hair and leaned his head down lower toward her ear. “Marita, I will take care of this but I need you to do what I say.” He whispered.

“Tony, wha-“ she gasped.

“Shhh. Just listen. When I give the word, I want you to leap out of the car.”

“But the car is in motion!”

“When you jump, you immediately curl your knees. It will be rough but you will survive.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I am going to make sure these bastards don’t hurt us every again.”

“Please, be careful,” she wiped her tears.

“Don’t worry, sugar pie,” he kissed her ear, “I promised you a honeymoon in Vegas, didn’t I? And I keep my promises.”

“I love you, Tony,” she kissed him softly.

“I love you too.”

Marita slowly leaned up, wiping her tears. Tony took a deep breath, massaging his burnt eye. “Tell me something, Belmont, “ the doctor coughed, “Where exactly are we headed?”

“Now would be the appropriate time for you to shut up, doc,” Belmont grunted.

“I mean, we are on an Island, right?” Tony smirked, “Then I can only assume The Rogue is another unit of the Liberation. Where are they?”

“You hear a lot, blind man,” the blonde man grunted, “Moe, if he talks again, shoot him.”

Tony jerked as he felt the barrel poke him in the shoulder blades. The blind man slowly turned around, smiling. Moe looked a little disgusted, as he didn’t have his blindfold. All he saw was his damaged eye and the burnt pit where the old one used to me. Marita slowly removed her seat beat. “Quit looking at me, moron,” Moe ordered.

“NOW!” Tony shifted to the side and grabbed the M-16 barrel.

Marita screamed as she opened the door and flew into the air, as the gunfire erupted in the jeep. She grunted as she landed on side and rolled into the bushes. She quickly got up and looked the escaping vehicle. She saw Moe screaming as the muzzle flash of gunfire exploded within the vehicle. Marita started to limp after them, hoping Tony would survive whatever he was planning.

Tony grunted as he swung the barrel of the M-16 in the front of the jeep. The bullets immediately ripped into Pristine, exploded out her torso. Belmont grunted as one of the bullets ripped into his thigh. He quickly pulled out a gun and pointed it back toward Tony. The doctor quickly saw the blurry image of what the second-in-command was doing, so he thrust forward, bring Moe with him. Belmont then fired and the bullet struck Moe in the head, making him fly off the back of the jeep. Tony then grabbed Belmont’s arm and tried to wrestle the gun out of it, firing shots wildly into the air.. The jeep continued to weave on and off the road.

Belmont then quickly dropped his gun and grabbed Tony by the hair. The doctor screamed as he fought to get away from him. Tony then felt of his elbow and flung his arm directly into it and made him let go. The doctor slumped back into the back seat. Belmont then reached over to grab the side arm that Pristine had and managed to look up just in time as they were moving directly into the path of a tree.

The jeep stopped abruptly as they came to a violent stop. Metal crushed against the long stand tree, followed by breaking glass of the windshield. Tony howled as the momentum flung him from the jeep into the air. He screamed, as he could not even see what was happening. Grunted, he landed hard on the ground a good eight feet from the vehicle.

Tony shook off the pain throbbing in the back of his head. He slowly got on all four. He was seeing a blurry image of the remaining wreck of the jeep, spewing out steam from the radiator. Tony slowly started to crawl toward it. As he moved like a turtle toward the wreck, he found Belmont’s gun sitting on the ground. He gently picked it up and stood up, walking the rest of the way.

Belmont was collapsed over the steering wheel. He slowly leaned back, blood coming out of his nose and a few cuts on this face. He turned just in time to see Tony walk up to him and put the gun toward his head. The doctor could only see a blurry image but at that close range he didn’t need to see much to pull the trigger.

CLICK!

Tony hissed and pulled the trigger again. CLICK!

Belmont then began to laugh. He slowly pulled the gun from his lap that he managed to get off of Pristine’s body. Tony sighed, tossing the gun toward the ground. The blonde man coughed as he got out of the jeep, keeping his eyes on the doctor. “You are one in a million, Tony,” Belmont coughed out blood onto the ground, “Had you not screwed me royally, I would have offered you a role in the Liberation.”

“And I would have told you where to stick it.” The doctor replied.

“Never the less, I think I will kill you now and leave this island in the dust.” The blonde man grunted, “Your friends will never find me through the jungle and in two weeks, I’ll be gone.”

Tony didn’t say anything. He just listened. Belmont wouldn’t have just said what he said, unless he had transport off the Island. The doctor was unsure of if he could tell him where it was, and after he shot him, he’d leave a message for his friends. Tony didn’t mind dying; he was only sad that he wouldn’t keep his promise to Marita. Belmont then approached him, cocking back the breech on his gun. “Any last words before I kill you, fool?” the man groaned.

Tony didn’t need any last words. The Polliwog said them for him.

Belmont jumped as the massive roar echoed in the distance. The trees began to sway as a large shape started to mow its way through the jungle. The blonde man then grabbed Tony, putting him in a headlock. He quickly put the gun on the side of his head. Tony then closed his eye; he didn’t want to see the Polliwog. He couldn’t. If he did, he wasn’t sure he could comprehend it. The loud tremor indicated it had made it through the woods. The growl signaled it was not happy.

It slowly approached Tony and Belmont. The blonde man began to back off with the doctor as his human shield. Goose bumps flooded Tony’s spine as the vibrations of the Polliwog’s growl echoed through him. “CALL IT OFF!” Belmont screamed.

“I can’t do that.” The doctor whispered.

“If you don’t call him off, I will kill you, jackass!”

“What do you think the Polliwog will do to you if that happens?”

“WE TRACKED YOUR ELECTROMAGNETIC SIGNAL! IT RESPONDED TO THE CREATURE SO YOU CONTORL HIM! DO IT NOW!”

“I can’t control him, “ Tony admitted, “I never could.”

Belmont said nothing, just letting the air escape from his lungs.

“You don’t get it, do you, Belmont,” Tony grunted, “He hasn’t been protecting the Island . . .he’s been protecting me.”

“Call him off,” Belmont whispered out of desperation.

The Polliwog growled heavily as it approached.

“I think you are making him mad.” Tony chuckled.

Belmont then shoved him down to the ground and opened fire on the monster. Tony covered his ears under the deafening roar. The gunfire ripped from the gun and then he heard the Polliwog chomping into the body of Belmont. The blonde man screamed as he was being ripped apart in the creature’s giant maw.

Tony took a deep breath as the screaming had stopped. He slowly leaned up, keeping his eye closed. The Polliwog was leaning down toward him; he could tell cause he felt it’s warm breath caress him. Tony slowly reached up his hand and reached out for the monster. The Polliwog let him feel it’s skin; which consisted of a slimy residue and what could best be felt as feathers. The blind doctor quickly brought his hand back; trying to keep his heart from racing over the fact that he just touched a monster that defied the laws of science. He wiped the slime off of his hand onto his pants leg and looked up to where the Polliwog was. “Thank you . ..for always being there for me.” Tony said in awe of the beast.

The Polliwog let out his massive roar once last time. Then Tony could hear him turning around and marching back into the jungle forest. Tony slowly stood up and began to walk back toward the jeep. He coughed up, feeling tired and hurting. He hoped all his friends were okay; he knew Marita would be. Plus, he knew she could be thankful he lived through this encounter. The blind man collapsed near the jeep, and slumped against the tire using it as a back rest. As he let his hand droop down, he felt something on the ground. He felt of it again and realized it was a pair glasses. As he brought them close to his eye, he chuckled as he could see they were sunglasses. He slowly put them on his aching face, and smiled. “Yep, “ he chuckled, “Much better than a blindfold.”

Tony then turned his face when he heard a second jeep coming to a screeching halt. “TONY!” Marita screamed in delight.

Tony smirked, the sun light reflecting off his shades. The Latina grunted as she stumbled out of the jeep and ran toward him. McKay slowly got out, holding out his pistol. Hal looked around as well noticing the dead bodies of Pristine and Belmont. Sawyer held the shot gun aloft on his shoulder while Kate smiled at the blind doctor, happy he was alive. Marita held onto Tony tightly, almost not willing to let him go. “Tony, you okay?” McKay asked.

“Never better,” he chuckled, then winced from soreness.

“How the hell did you stop these baddies, co-cheese?” Sawyer asked.

“Nothing doing,” the blind doctor chuckled, “The Polliwog says Hi.”

“Mother of God,” Hal whispered.

“Yeah, we thought we heard him,” the Australian smirked.

“John?” Tony asked, “ Mia? Locke?”

“They are all alive,” Kate said, “But we lost a few too.”

“Damn,” the blind doctor whispered.

“Well, unless you want to stick around Tony, we better be heading back,” McKay helped bring him toward the Jeep.

The group piled on onto the second vehicle. Kate helped Marita and Tony get on the back with her. Tony winced from the soreness of flying out of the jeep when it crashed. As McKay turned them around, they began to head back. Kate gently held onto Marita and rubbed Tony’s back. “Tony, “ she said, close to his ear so he could hear, “Where was Belmont taking you?”

Tony turned toward her. He thought about what Belmont said about getting off the Island and in two weeks time, it would be easy. The blind doctor then made a fateful decision he hoped would not backfire on him. “No where, Kate,” he said in all seriousness, “He was panicking. All he kept spouting about was getting away from us. He was a coward, nothing more.”

“Damn straight, “ Sawyer agreed, “We kicked his ass and his whole Platoon. John Wayne ain’t got nothing on us.”

Tony smirked at Sawyer’s comment and held Marita close. He took a deep breath, wondering what his next move will become.
