Part 224: Watchman Part 2

The Afternoon has slipped into the nighttime and the nighttime into the week hours of the morning. The Lakota girl knew she probably should be sleeping but didn’t feel up to it. Mia stared at the screen, looking at her friends tied up like hogs about to be slaughtered. She had to do something; but what? If she let the Colonel know she got access to Watchman, would he let them go like he said they would or would she simply join them out there, tied to a post? She didn’t know. Would the Colonel leave her alone because of the nightmares that Granny had been giving him? The Lakota girl grunted, rubbing her head. Too many questions and not enough answers. “Answers.” She whispered.

It had just donned on her. There were still several mysterious that Watchman had told her but she didn’t clarify on yet. She quickly pulled out her pad and pen. Mia figured her best chance to bargaining with the Colonel would be to get as much information from Watchman as she could. Then she could hold that over his head while she led the others out to there. She quickly reached her hands up to the keyboard and began typing. “Watchman, show me the 13 patterns you have been tracking.”

The images on the left of her console began to flicker alive. The first one was Tony, which she already knew. Then the image shifted to Locke. She quickly wrote his name down, making even more sense. Then the satellite image shifted to heat signatures from one of the cabins. A blue haze swept over the image and it gave her a picture of the Colonel with a red circle over his image. Then the red circle appeared over Belmont, then Frakes, then the big one called Texas. The images then shifted outside, and the red circle felt over Cassandra. As it past by the red circle appeared over Pristine then Brooklyn. Then the image shifted back toward her tied up friends and landed on one of the people she was not expecting. “Jack?” she pondered.

Then image shifted again to yet another survivor. “Hurley!” she gasped, remembering his problem with the numbers.

The image then shifted toward another building and it showed a small child weeping in a corner, hugging his knees. Mia quickly recognized it as Walt. Before she could say anything, the image shifted again, right on top of her. She slowly moved her hand, feeling where seeing herself on a monitor, knowing full well the camera looking at her was high in space. Then the image shifted one last time, arriving on a group of people walking through the woods. Mia squinted to see what the image was and was amazed that the red circle was highlighted on Micheal. From what Locke had told her, Walt was special, kinda like them. However, why no mention of Micheal? Is it possible Walt inherited his gifts from Micheal, but the older man never knew he had them and thus never used them? The image then caught Mia’s attention again; Micheal wasn’t alone.

Micheal was amid a crowd advancing toward them. Jenny was in the lead and next to Micheal was Yolanda. Jin followed closely by as did his wife Sun. Mia could only conclude that they came back cause the Liberation had stolen Walt. It was the only thing that made sense. The Lakota girl was then curious about the masked man following up the rear of their group. She didn’t recognize him; nor did he look like he belonged. Mia decided to ask Watchman if he could tell her who that man was. She thought about it and typed it in her best way in words he might understand. “Watchman,” she typed, “Identify electromagnetic pattern behind pattern #13.”

UNABLE TO COMPLY

Mia sighed and typed, “Why?”

SUBJECT HAS NO ELECTROMAGNETIC PATTERN.

Mia blinked a few times. If that person had no electromagnetic pattern, wouldn’t that mean he was dead? But yet, he was walking right there on the screen. Mia typed in, “Do you know why he has no electromagnetic pattern?”

WATCHMAN HAS FILES ON SUBJECTS IN THIS STATE.
LOGICAL CONCLUSION> SUBJECT IS JAEGER UNIT.

“Jaeger Unit?” Mia said, then typed, “What is a Jaeger Unit?”

JAEGER UNITS WERE CREATED BY DR. FRITZ GRUBER. THESE SPECIMENS WERE DESIGNED TO BECOME SOLDIERS FOR GOVERNMENT AND CORPORATE PROTECTION AND ASSASSINATION. DHARMA CORPORATION FUNDED RESEARCH. THE SUCCESS RATE WAS LAST DATED AT 47%.

“That’s not very good,” she whispered.

JAEGER UNITS WERE GENETICALLY ALTERED WITH ANIMAL DNA TO SECURE OBJECTIVES. SUBJECTS RANGE FROM ABILITES OF BONE MARROW CHANGE, NIGHT VISIONS, ENHANCED HEARING, ENHANCED REFLEXES, ENHANCED PERCEPTION. OUT OF 100 UNITS CONSTRUCTED, ONLY 12 HAVE LEFT THE ISLAND.

“Twelve?” she said. If Watchman was correct, that meant that eighty eight units were still on the island. “Where are the remaining 88 units?” she typed.

THAT WOULD REQUIRE ACTIVATION OF HOMING BEACONS. DO YOU WISH TO PROCEED? Y/N

Mia typed Y

A few seconds later and some beeps on her console, the monitor came back to life.

REMAINING JAEGER UNITS ARE CONTAINED WITHHIN STORAGE HOLD. ONE IS ACTIVE ON ISLAND SURFACE.
DO YOU WISH TO SEE MANIFEST? Y/N

Mia was curious about what he meant, so she typed Y.

JAEGER UNIT 001> ARTHUR
JAEGER UNIT 002> PRINCESS
JAEGER UNIT 003> MASTER
JAEGER UNIT 004> WALRUS
JAEGER UNIT 005> WARRIOR
JAEGER UNIT 006> CALVERA
JAEGER UNIT 007> BLITZKRIEG
JAEGER UNIT 008> BLASTER
JAEGER UNIT 009> SIMO STATUS: INACTIVE
JAEGER UNIT 010> MILLION
JAEGER UNIT 011> PRIMO
JAEGER UNIT 012> SIMPLE SIMON
JAEGER UNIT 013> STAR
JAEGER UNIT 014> TRIDENT
JAEGER UNIT 015> SAM HANE

Mia then realized he was going to display the entire list of the Jaeger Units. She quickly typed, “Stop Manifest.”

COMPLYING.

Mia then looked back toward the screen with Jenny, Micheal and the others advancing toward them. If they were coming, then they were about to mount a rescue. Mia was smart enough to know they wouldn’t do it on their own. Sayid and McKay were out there as well. Then came her conundrum; does she tell the Colonel and spare their lives? Or see what type of rescue plan they can muster?

And . . . . .help them from here.

Mia smiled. That was it! With Watchman’s help, she could get them all out of there. Or at least, she hoped. As she was tapping her pen against her lips, a bunch of words came up on the monitor.

WARNING. POWER USAGE IS HOLDING BUT MEMORY CORE IS NOW REDUCED TO 40%. CONTINUAL USAGE OF WATCHMAN WILL REDUCE MEMORY CORE.

Mia was concerned. She started to type, “What is causing your memory core reduction?”

SEEPAGE FROM TURBINE RESERVES. MEMORY CORE IS DEGRADING. MEMORY CORE SHUTDOWN WILL COMMENCE IN ESTIMATED SIX HOURS IF POWER USAGE REMAINS. BEGIN TRANSFER TO MOLE UNIT WHEN CORE REACHES 15%? Y/N

Mia tilted her head and then typed, “Is that a safety measure? The transfer to the Mole Unit?”

YES.

Mia typed in Y.

COMPLYING. PREPARATIONS ARE READY. TRANSFER WILL COMMENCE WHEN MEMORY CORE IS REDUCED TO 15%.

Mia then typed in, “Where is the memory core?”

To her left on the monitor, the satellite images flickered yet again and she was shown a section of the jungle. She looked closely at the nighttime picture, realizing that the majority of the vegetation was dead. The trees were dying, and the vines were hanging by a thread. Mia then realized she was looking at the place Danielle called The Dark Territory. The Lakota girl was able to put two and two together. If Watchman’s memory care was under the ground in that area, then it must be leaking radiation or something. It was enough to kill the plant life in the surrounding area. That must also be the reason the Polliwog was hanging around. Danielle was right; they were designed to protect the Island, especially that section of it.

Mia continued writing everything down. She wanted to make sure people knew what she knew. Especially if their rescue was about to happen in the next hour or so. “Hang on, John,” she whispered to herself mostly, “We’ll get out of here soon.
