Part 115: Day 27
The new day had finally come. Inside the cave the shut was shining near the roof of the waterfall entrance. Even though he had no sight, Tony could felt he sun hitting his face. He slowly leaned up, grunting. He had been sleeping on sand for 18 days, getting use to hard ground was going to take some time. He massaged his face, and felt of his oily hair; he could sure use a bath. “Morning, Tony.” Kate whispered.
“Morning, Miss Kate.” The blind doctor smiled, “I hardly hear any snoring or voices. The people around here don’t sleep?”
”No, most everybody has gone to the beach,” she said, gently placing some fruit in his hand, “We have plenty of spare material. If you want, you can stay here or build your own shelters at the beach.”
“I’ll talk to my friends. Thank you . . .for everything.”
“Sure thing,” she said, standing up and as she walked away, “Morning, Marita.”
“Morning,” she said.
Tony munched on some of the fruit. Then he hand it to Marita who ate some and then sipped on it’s juices. “Nice girl.” She said.
“Yes, indeed.” The blind doctor whispered, “I wonder who was helpless in her life?”
“Huh?” the Latina stewardess blinked, “Tony, what do you mean?”
“Kate seems to be wanting to help me a lot. Judging by the tone in her voice and the way she seems to always be walking on eggshells around me, I can only assume it’s because I am blind. She seems eager to treat me like a cripple.”
“Go easy on them, Tony. They don’t know you like we do.”
“True, they don’t. Which means I am going to have to prove myself all over again.”
“No, you don’t, man,” John said, waking up, “You ain’t got nothing to prove to anybody.”
“Thanks, John,” Tony smiled, “How are you feeling?”
“Quite honestly? I feel like crap. Nothing a good bath wouldn’t cure. I don’t suppose they got showers on this side of the island, do they?”
“No, but they do have an ocean view,” the blind doctor smiled, “McKay, you awake?”
“Barely,” the Australian moaned, rubbing his nose, “I used a rock as a pillow. I think my neck is broke.”
“How many bars of soap do we have?”
“Last time I checked, four. Why?”
“What say we have breakfast on the beach and take us a nice ocean bath? Who’s up for that?” Tony chuckled.
“OH, me!” Marita playfully gasped.
“Hell yeah.” John laughed.
“I got my hand raised.” Seth mentioned, overhearing the conversation.
“Excellent, wake everybody up. We’re going to the beach.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------,
The group had gathered their gear and made their trek to the beach. Kate was kind enough to lead the way, since she was heading in that direction anyway. The group did feel a little dirty after their five day trek to get to the other side of the island. A bath would do everybody good and perk up their spirits.
Mia looked at the surrounding grass. It was different on this side of the island. It grew up in beautiful strands. They swayed with every brush of the wind. The Lakota girl smiled, realizing these were from her dream. She was indeed in the right place at that moment. She only hoped the man called Locke would be around long enough for her to talk with him after her bath.
Seth followed Shanna and Mandy. He held onto the straps of his backpack. The bookstore worker was getting a little sick of walking. There were no tunes. His batteries in his tape player died on their five day trek. Seth took a deep breath, realizing that he would have to provide the tunes for his walk. “Makin a living the old hard way,” he started to crone.
Mandy and Shanna looked back at him. He just smiled and kept singing.
Taking and Giving by day by day
I dig snow and rain
And the bright sunshine
Draggin the Line.
Mandy and Shanna giggled at Seth’s singing. They then immediately started to chime in, singing along with him. Seth started to laugh as he sung.
My dog Sam eats purple flowers
Ain't got much, but what we got's ours
We dig snow and rain and the bright sunshine
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
I feel fine, I'm talkin' 'bout peace of mind
I'm gonna take my time, I'm gettin' the good sign
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
The group then laughed at the three friends singing the classic sound. Seth walked up and placed his arm around both Shanna and Mandy. “That was great!” he laughed.
“That was fun.” Mandy giggled.
“I must admit, I am impressed, Mandy,” Shanna laughed, shaking her hand, “You didn’t really strike me as the type of person who would know a Tommy James and The Shondells song.”
“Who?” she blinked.
“Tommy James and The Shondells?” Seth said puzzled, “They are the ones who sang that song.”
“Are you sure?” the young blonde blinked, “I thought it was REM. You know? From the Austin Powers Soundtrack.”
Tony smiled, overhearing their laughter at explaining to Mandy she was listening to a cover of the song. The poor blonde sounded disappointed, complaining that one of her favorite bands didn’t have any creativity. Kate walked ahead but she overheard the conversation as well. What she quickly noticed was their closeness; how they all seemed to be less like friends and more like family. The brunette tucked her hair back behind her ears, wondering how they got so close. In fact, she was slightly jealous over it. They had over 40 people here and she barely knew most of them. She was friends with many people but close? They weren’t allowed to be close.
Most had too many secrets they weren’t yet ready to reveal.
“Marita, do you think my parents are on the beach?” Eddie said.
Marita was about to say something but then touched Tony’s shoulder, since he was the one who checked the manifest with McKay. Tony automatically knew what she needed. The blind doctor touched him on the shoulder. “Eddie, we checked out a list of the passengers last night.” He whispered, “Your parents were listed under the Missing.”
“Are they dead?” he said with a frown.
“We don’t know that. They just can’t be found at the moment. Perhaps, these good people haven’t looked everywhere.”
Eddie nodded his head in agreement. He always knew that Tony knew most everything, so why didn’t they look everywhere? The little boy stepped forward and gently pulled on Kate’s fingers. “Mrs. Kate, do you know my parents, The Trascals?” he asked.
“I’m sorry, Eddie. I don’t know that name.” she said honestly.
“Does Mr. Jack know? Or Mr. Sawyer?”
“If you want me too, I’ll ask them.” She smiled.
“Thank you, I would.”
Tony took a deep sigh. The fact that they were missing more than likely meant they were dead. Their bodies were just simply not found yet. However, he wasn’t going to take away the boy’s hope. Not till he was absolutely sure their was none. But the wave of ocean breeze striking his face told him that it would be something to wait for another time.
“Morning, Miss Kate.” The blind doctor smiled, “I hardly hear any snoring or voices. The people around here don’t sleep?”
