Part 450: Jate

8:46 am

The establishment was called Sharp’s Crossing. It was a stable of the restaurant industry in Los Angeles for nearly 40 years. It served food nearly round the clock. It was one of the all night restaurant’s left in Uptown LA. It mostly got it’s business from business men, lawyers, stock brokers and especially hospital personnel, considering it was right across the street from a major metropolitan hospital. Kate smiled as she drove into the parking lot. She had seen it many times but never bothered to pay attention to it. She couldn’t wait to eat breakfast but she really couldn’t wait to see Jack.

She slowly got out of her vehicle and locked it up. The cool wind blew slightly, making her tuck in her jean jacket. As he turned the corner to walk up on the restaurant’s front porch area, Jack was already waiting for her. The doctor looked like he always had done. His hair was buzz cut short, along with a three day beard. He was wearing a leather overcoat but underneath was his simple OR scrubs that he wore at work. As far as Kate was concerned, he looked adorable. “Morning, Jack,” she said, hugging and kissing him on the cheek.

“Morning, Kate.” He replied, “Oh, you look so pretty.”

“And you look like you’ve always looked.” She smiled at him, taking his arm.

“Is that a compliment or a subtle way of telling me I should change?”

“A little bit of both,” Kate smiled, “You should change, Jack but not too much.”

Jack smiled as he held up the door for her inside the restaurant. The matridee welcomed them to Sharp’s Crossing and then proceeded to get them a table. Kate held onto Jack as they walked through the bottom half of the restaurant and then up toward a balcony with the front view of the street. Jack walked over and held Kate’s chair out for her. She smiled, trying to suppress a giggle. She felt a little foolish but she had to admit, she enjoyed the feeling of being pampered. Jack sat down across from her and they both pulled out their menu’s. As the waiter came over to take their orders, Kate waited for Jack to order. “I’ll have the strawberry waffle with a side of bacon. To drink, I’ll have a tall glass of your orange juice.” Jack then smiled as he traced the outline of the menu, “And the lady will have the apple crepes, along with the sausage links, plus fruit and cream. Coffee, Kate?”

Kate smiled. She was flattered that Jack was ordering for her; a trait no one had done for her since high school. “Yes, coffee will be fine.” She grinned.

Jack took her menu and then gave both to the waiter. He smiled at her across the table. She crossed her arms and smiled; staring out the window. “Stop it.” She giggled.

“Stop what?” he asked, innocently.

“Stop looking at me like that,” she covered her mouth with her fingers, “I’m going to blush.”

Jack leaned forward, bracing against the table with his forearms. “I’ve wanted to get you alone for some time now,” he smirked, “Forgive me but I like looking at you.”

Kate smiled again. She then reached over, holding out her hand. Jack took it without hesitation. The two adults held hands and stared at each other. For some moments, words were not needed. The doctor stared at the former fugitive, massaging her soft hands. “How is life at the Riggs household?” he asked.

“It’s quiet.” She smiled, “I like quiet.”

“I like quiet too. I’m glad . . .our lives are not as chaotic as they use to be, but . . “

Kate looked at him. “But what, Jack?” she asked.

Jack laughed briefly, like he always did. He looked at her, shaking his head slightly. “ I must admit I miss the rush of the excitement.” He smiled.

“I understand, Jack,” she said, rubbing his hand back, “But now we can make our own excitement. “

The doctor shook his head in agreement. “Yes,” he grinned, “Yes we can.”

After a few minutes, their breakfast arrived. Jack ate his waffles with strawberries and cream. Kate ate her apple crepes, amazed how good they tasted. She also enjoyed the sausage, along with the fruit and cream mix. It was a nice collision of taste sensations, as she assumed Jack would know about that. After they were done eating, Kate sipped on her coffee while Jack got another round of orange juice. Jack checked his watch and then relaxed a bit. “How much longer do you have?” the brunette asked.

“Another 40 minutes,” he told her, “And we’re going to not waste a single moment.”

“Maybe you should go on a doctor’s hiatus?” she smiled, “Head down to Cancun or Belize for a sabbatical? I could go with you. You know, Stress Relief.”

Jack laughed and rubbed his eyes. “Kate, that sounds like Heaven.” He admitted.

Kate sipped her coffee again. She found her eyes falling on Jack and his demeanor. He was handsome, with rugged good looks. He was brave, courageous, funny and intelligent. He was everything she wanted in a man. However, she wasn’t sure how she could tell him that. Or did he already know? Jack swallowed the last of juice and leaned forward again. “Tell me what you are thinking right now.” He whispered to her.

Kate shied away slightly and then looked back at him. “ I was just wondering.” She whispered.

“Wondering what?”

“Wondering what you were going to tell me last Christmas before I stopped you.” She confessed.

Jack didn’t smile nor did he frown. He simply kept his arms tucked on the side of the table, and just stared at the remainder of their breakfast. He then calmly pulled his right arm out from his side and picked up the salt shaker. The doctor just calmly twisted it around and around; sliding it on the table. “I was going to tell you how I felt.” He whispered, “How I feel . .right now.”

Kate felt like her heart was racing similar to a bumblebee. She leaned forward a bit. “How are you feeling?” she asked him.

“I feel . . . like I felt when we first met,” He smiled, “Like I need you, Kate. You were there for me when I needed you. I’m . . .lost without you.”

Kate felt tears swelling up her in eyes. She didn’t think that it would come to that but she was hoping above all else he would say something. Jack gently squeezed her hand tighter. “Say something, Kate,” he whispered, “Tell me you feel the same way.”

She squeezed his hand, as he covered her mouth; trying not to cry. “I’m scared, Jack,” she whispered, “I’ve always been on the run and this . . .this is new to me.”

“I’m scared too,” he said, his eyes getting watery, “Tell me we can be scared together.”

“We can be,” was all she managed to say.

“You know,” he said, wiping his very small tears, “I’ve never eaten strawberries on my waffles before.”

Kate laughed a bit, wondering why the change in subject. “So why did you eat them today?” she asked.

“Because I didn’t want you to be disgusted when I kissed you.” He admitted.

“Do you want to kiss me?”

“Oh, God, yes.” He huffed.

The two lovers quickly shot across the table, letting her lips collide. Kate held onto him as she kissed him and Jack gently held onto her too. He was worried, the awkward stance would lose their balance. He then kissed her again, letting his tongue caress hers. After they parted, Kate giggled a bit, rubbing his cheek. “You do taste like strawberries,” she laughed.

“I’m glad you approve.” He smiled.

The couple then found a few laughs and a small amount of applause from the patronage of the restaurant. A few women were fanning themselves; not expecting such passion that early in the morning. Two male lawyers laughed at the courage to kiss a woman for the whole restaurant to see; toasting Jack with their coffee mugs. Kate was definitely blushing now; but it felt good. The doctor just smiled and then waved his hand. “Check please.” He called out.

The couple walked out of the restaurant. Kate had slid her arm around his waist and Jack kept his arm around her; bringing him closer to her. The doctor had been on some major lows with his life. His failed marriage, his father’s addiction and other things he couldn’t fathom. He vowed that he wasn’t going to mess this up; he’ll be there for Kate when she needed him. Kate giggled a bit as they walked along; feeling the concrete under her high heels. “Sawyer will be upset.” She smiled.

“He’ll get over it.” Jack laughed.

“Yes, he will.” The brunette then looked up at him, “What about Jilly?”

Jack stopped her in the middle of the parking lot and looked at her. “Jilly was a great moment in my life,” he told her, “I loved her with all my heart that I could give her. But she was so patient and understanding. She knew . . . .that you and I were meant to be.”

“I think she just earned a Christmas Present from me.” Kate laughed, leaning up and kissing him.

Jack put his arms around her, nearly picking her up off her feet. Kate felt lighter than air; she had only been this happy one previous time and she knew that couldn’t last. She felt that Jack was the man for her and she was looking forward to finding out where this relationship would go. She wanted to hold him and kiss him right then and there; making the moment last forever.

But some moments are always interrupted when they least want them to be.

The sound of a speeding vehicle interrupted their kiss. They both looked toward the entrance of the restaurant and a black van zoomed into the side street. They immediately came to the opening of the parking lot. Kate had seen this many times before with US Marshals. “No, no, no, no.” she whimpered.

Jack could tell this was for her. He then grabbed her by the arm and proceeded to run her toward her vehicle. He looked back and could then see two men dressed up like SWAT team cops running at them. The doctor didn’t get a chance to notice the strange rifles they were carrying. The van kept up with them as they ran into the parking lot. “Get in your truck and haul ass!” Jack screamed.

“Jack, I can’t!” she said, one last protest at what they just went through.

“Damn it, Kate, RUN!” he ordered, “I’ll find you! I’m not going to lose-“

Jack’s words were cut short by a dart striking him in the back between his shoulder blades. The doctor yelled in pain as he felt the electricity surge into him; knocking him off his feet. By the time he pulled out the dart, he had already fallen onto the ground. Kate turned around and was then struck by a dart into her chest. She screamed in pain at the electricity jolting her heart and making a stabbing sensation in her brain. The former fugitive immediately collapsed onto her buttocks; resting against the tire.

The new couple’s eyes locked again. With all the strength he had left in his being, he grunted as he reached over and took Kate’s hand. The brunette was losing the feeling in her limps too. She knew it was the only gesture he could give her; a subtle way of saying he wasn’t going to let her go. In that one brief moment, Kate loved him more than she had ever loved anyone. The black van stopped four feet from their right. The two SWAT men quickly scooped down for the couple.

Then they picked up Jack by the arms and began to carry him away.

Kate held onto his hand but didn’t have the strength to hold him. The brunette tried to scream but felt like she was blacking out. She watched in horror as the strange men loaded up the man she professed her love to into a black van with no identifying markers. She thought they were US Marshals, undercover to come and get her. Jack knew it too, otherwise he would have run. What possible reason would anybody have to kidnap Jack?

It was the last thought on Kate’s mind as she started to slip into unconsciousness; the black van fading in a blurry haze.
