Part 448: Mia's Morning

7:35 am

Mia whistled a tune as she gently spread jam on the lightly browned toast. It was one of Shelley’s favorite breakfasts before school. The little girl was drawing a picture as she waited for her mother to be done. Within moments, she found herself whistling along with her. Mia smiled and looked at her; feeling a sense of motherly joy at her daughter adapting her abilities. “Now you’re both whistling?” John smiled as he came into the kitchen, “I feel so left out.”

“You can whistle too, Daddy.” Shelley said with a giggle.

“He can’t, baby.” Mia said, placing the toast on the table for her daughter.

“Mommy, what’s wrong?” the little girl said, munching her toast, “Why won’t you let daddy whistle?”

“No, honey, I’m not stopping him,” the Lakota laughed, “Your daddy CAN’T whistle.”

John sipped on his coffee and turned around; bracing himself on the counter. He could tell where this heading. He coughed and perched his lips together. He made a slight blowing sound, which was followed by something similar to the noise of a bird dying. Shelley laughed, rubbing her eye at her father. “You’re bad, daddy!” she giggled.

“I am, I really am.” He conceded, “finish your breakfast, honey. Mrs. Gleason is waiting.”

“What are you teaching in gym today, John?” Mia asked, eating her own toast.

“Oh, it’s horrible. The board is forcing me to teach these kids how to square dance.” He grunted, finishing his coffee,” I thought they only did crap like this back in the 50’s.”

“Is everybody on the board of education OLD?” his wife smirked.

“Uh . . .YEAH, actually.”

“Well, there you go.” The Lakota giggled.

After breakfast, John got his gear and proceeded toward his truck. Shelley was right behind him as per their routine. Before John went to teach school, he would drop Shelley off at the day care. It was one of the more advanced ones, plus their daughter had been excelling in other things as well. With any luck, she might be able to skip kindergardan. The little girl ran to the other side of the truck and opened the door. As she placed her backpack into the seat, she gasped as if she forgot something. “What’s wrong, Shell?” John looked at her.

“I forgot to tell mommy something.” She jumped down off her seat, “I’ll be right back.”

“Hurry up, baby. I can’t be late.”

Shelley quickly cut across the driveway and over the front lawn. Mia, like always, was standing on the porch getting ready to watch them leave. She saw her daughter running toward her and stepped down to open her arms. Shelley hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. “I had to tell you something before I left, mommy.” She said.

“Okay,” Mia smiled.

Shelley then leaned over and whispered into her mother’s ear. Mia continued to smile but then her smile slowly faded away. She blinked a little bit and then pulled back her daughter so she could face her. “Who is he talking about?” she asked Shelley.

“I don’t know,” her daughter confessed, “But he said you would.”

Mia was confused. She trusted her daughter completely and wondered what she just meant by the statement. She placed her back on the ground and allowed her to join her father. John blew Mia a kiss from the truck and she waved back. After she saw her husband and daughter disappear, she walked back into the house. Mia’s face then lit up when she saw Kate walking down in a new blouse, blue jeans and high heels. She smiled with a shyness reserved for schoolgirls. “Tell me I look pretty, Mia.” Kate said, staring at herself in the mirror.

“You look gorgeous, “ Mia stood behind her, fluffing up her hair, “ You’re going to knock Jack off his feet.”

“It’s kinda weird,” the former fugitive giggled, “Have you ever gone to a breakfast date?”

“He’s a doctor, Kate. He’s got to take the time that he can and it will mean a lot to him that you can accommodate his schedule.”

Kate pushed her fake glasses up on her nose and smiled. “I’m scared, Mia.” She whispered.

“It makes you feel any better, honey, I’m sure he is too.” Mia hugged her, “Enjoy your breakfast date and take it slow.”

“I love you, sister-in-law.” She hugged her.

“I was so glad you came into our family, Kate,” Mia kissed her on the cheek, “Now go have a good breakfast.”

Kate picked up her blue jean jacket and her car keys. She waved goodbye to Mia and left the house. Mia smiled at her, happy that she was finally happy. Kate had come along way with her relationships. She was confused about who she loved; Seth, Sawyer or Jack. Seth admitted there would always be a part of his heart that belonged to Kate, due to what they went through on the Island. She had an attraction to Sawyer, as well as Jack. But in the end, as far as Love goes, Mia always knew that she would end up with Jack.

Mia sat down and picked up her crossword puzzle. She looked at it and smiled, realizing that John had gotten up at night for his chocolate milk and worked on it with out her permission. He even wrote “sorry” in the margin of the book. “You sneak.” She giggled.

Mia then raised an eyebrow as she heard a car engine arrive in the driveway. She then peered up and saw a vehicle through her sheer drapes. A man exited the vehicle and proceeded to walk up to the front door. Mia then walked up to the door to greet the man. She opened the door, and saw the man through the secondary screen door. The oriental man was slightly older, similar to Locke’s age. He smiled with a pleasant smile, that also told Mia he was hiding something. “Mrs. Riggs?” he asked.

“Yes?” the Lakota answered.

“Hello, my name is Kenoh Kamiyama. I present High Peaks Academy.”

Mia then blinked. She knew that name; it was the exceptional private school upstate. She and John had had Shelley take special tests a long time ago and she knew that they were sent to that academy. “Is this about Shelley?” Mia asked.

“Yes, I’d like to discuss possible enrollment.”

“Please, come in.” Mia said, opening the door.

“Thank you,” he politely bowed.

Mia then walked into the kitchen. She then pointed to one of the kitchen chairs for Kamiyama to take a seat. The Lakota then leaned against the counter of her kitchen, near the stove. She gently crossed her arms and smiled. “So, what can you tell me?” she smiled.

“Well, our tuition starts at 20 thousand a year. It will provide housing, meals and any special teachers that you daughter would need.” He pulled out a form from his jacket, “Would you like to discuss a payment plan?”

“Money isn’t an object.” Mia smiled.

“Oh . .well . . .always nice to hear that.” He said, pulling out a pen, “Has Shelley exhibited any unique abilities?”

The woman raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” she asked.

“Writing, painting, exceptional music abilities, perhaps?”

“Oh.” Mia giggled, “ Yes, she is becoming quite the artist.”

“Ah,” the Asian man then pointed toward her watercolors on the fridge, “Yes, those are incredibly well done.”

“Is there anything else you want to know about Shelly?” Mia asked.

“Well, if possible, we’d like interview Shelley down at the academy. Are you free on weekends?”

“Yes, that’s fine,” she smiled, “Do you have a business card?”

“Of course,” he reaching in his pocket and giving it to her.

“Thank you for coming, Mr. Kamiyama.”

“Good day to you, Mrs. Riggs.” He smiled, as he shook her hand.

Mia walked out of the kitchen and escorted the man out. She gently closed the door and locked it. She stayed behind her sheer drapes for a moment, watching him get into his car and with a few minutes, leave. Mia then walked back over toward the kitchen table. The Lakota then braced herself on one of the chairs, then squatted. Mia peered under the table at where Kamiyama was sitting.

And found an electronic listening device.

The Lakota then stood up. She walked back over to the counter and crossed her arms; letting her hand rest over her mouth. Mia was worried something from the Island would come back to haunt them and now it seemed it did. Her dream from Brendon and the others they loss kinda pointed her in the right direction. Then John’s dream of the war party made Mia feel that something was going to happen but her husband would save the day. As of that moment, she understood what her daughter whispered to her earlier.

Brendon said not to trust him.

She was certain that she was being warned about Kamiyama but to what extent?
