Part 171: Payback Part 2
Locke and Mia began their walk into the jungle. The rain was pouring down in droves. The Lakota girl was holding onto her bandana, as it was already soaked and not working to keep the water out of her eyes. Locke ignored it and just kept going further. He waited till they had come to an area that was almost sheltered by the rain. “Sorry to bring you out here, Mia,” he said, “But I wanted to get you alone for a few minutes.”
“What’s wrong, Locke?” she asked.
“I wanted to thank you. It’s not a good idea to reveal the Hatch just yet. People would not understand.”
“Maybe Sayid would?” she asked.
“It’s possible but I can already tell he doesn’t trust me. I will have to earn his trust another way.”
“Just show him the Hatch, Locke. Something tells me that he would understand and accept it.”
“Perhaps you are right, “ He leaned against a tree, “I . . .I shouldn’t have sent you or Boone up in that tree.”
“Then Boone wouldn’t have died. Maybe I would have? Maybe you would have?”
“I would have gladly given my life for yours or his.”
“I know, sir,” Mia smiled.
“You still just might, Locke!” Shannon said.
Mia turned around and saw Shannon holding a gun toward them. Locke blinked, seeing the determination in her eyes. He slowly raised his hands, to show her he not no weapons. Was she there to kill him? “Shannon . .” he whispered.
“SHUT UP!!” she screamed pointing the gun at him, “You won’t talk your way out of this!”
Mia moved in front of her and Locke. She immediately started getting flashes of her dream; however, there was no Brendon hear to protect her. The tall blonde pointed the gun at Mia with shaking hands. “Move out of the way, Mia.” She said.
“You don’t want to do this, Shannon.” She girl pleaded.
“I swear to God I will kill you too, if you don’t get out of the way!” she screamed.
“Mia, do as she says,” Locke told her.
“Shannon, please,” Mia started to cry, “I would have gladly given my life for Boones but I wasn’t fast enough. Locke isn’t to blame for this.”
“You tried to save him and for that, I will not kill you, “ Shannon grunted, “But Locke lied to Jack who could have saved him. Now, MOVE!!”
Then Sayid, Kate and Jack burst from the trees. The Iraqi looked to Locke and then Mia, then back at Shannon. Jack and Kate stared at Shannon in disbelief either; realizing her grief had taken ahold of her. “She doesn’t believe us, Sayid,” Locke mentioned.
“Shannon!” Sayid begged, “Please, please listen to me.”
“He did something to Boone! I know it!” she screamed.
“You're not thinking rationally. You've never fired a gun before!”
Shannon then fires between Sayid and Mia. The Lakota yelped and jumped to the side. Kate held up her hands, not sure what to say. Sayid didn’t waver, as he approached her. “Shannon, you don’t want to do this,” he begged.
“YES, I DO!!” Shannon gritted her teeth, “What did you do to him?”
“I told you it was an accident.” Locke said.
“Shannon, if you do this, you can never take it back.” The Iraqi continued to approach her.
“Shannon . .” Jack said.
“Jack, you told me he was a liar!!” she screamed again.
There was a faint pause in the anger. Then in one fluid motion, Mia and Sayid tackled Shannon at the same time. The gun then went off the moment they hit her. The three people grunted as they hit the ground. Sayid quickly grabbed the gun away from her. Mia then rolled to the side as Shannon shoved her away. A thunderclap echoed in the distance, almost sounding like another gun shot. Mia blinked at the sound then leaned up and looked at Locke, lying on the ground. “NOO!!” she screamed, getting up and scooting toward him.
She looked down at Locke, seeing he was still breathing. He slowly raised his hand to touch the wound on his head. The small scrape slowly leaned red against the rain drops. Mia sighed deeply; it was just a graze. Shannon then got up and shoved Sayid down. “Shannon!” the Iraqi pleaded, “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t,” she grunted, “Get away.”
Shannon ran off into the jungle with Kate and Sayid following her. Locke slowly leaned up with Mia holding onto him. The Lakota girl then looked to Jack who stared at them both in disgust. He almost looked like he was going to spit on them. Or was it just Locke? “Jack, he’s wounded.” Mia whispered.
“Good,” he whispered as he turned around and walked off after his friends.
Locke then grunted as he got to his feet. Mia helped him up, holding onto his chest. He blinked, shaking his head, getting the cobwebs out. The Lakota girl felt so sorry for him; knowing full well why all this was happening. “Let me take you back to Tony, Locke,” she said, “He can treat you.”
“No, that is okay,” he patted her on the back, “I can treat myself.”
He began to walk away. Mia stood looking at him, wondering how he was going to regain the trust of the others. Trust was a big issue out here and many were losing it fast. She was glad to have John, Seth, Shanna and the others. How would it come between her and Mandy now that Shannon tried to kill her?
Mia then paused, remembering the thunderclap that sounded like a gunshot. The more she thought about it, the more she realized it probably was one. She turned and began to search through the woods for the sound of the gunfire.
“What’s wrong, Locke?” she asked.
