Part 162: Nearest to the End

Jack leaned over. He checked Boone’s vital signs. Mandy looked at the doctor hoping for some good news, but she wasn’t sure if she would get any. The doctor gently opened one of the young man’s eye lids. “C’mon, Boone,” he whispered.

“Is it not working?” Sun asked.

Jack paused and felt of the leg. He felt sick, feeling of it’s warmth. “The blood's not the problem. It's the leg. All the blood's pooling there . . .compartment syndrome.”

“What does that mean?” asked the blonde.

“It means Tony was right,” Jack sighed, “He didn't get this injury from a fall. Something crushed his leg.”

Sun then reached over and yanked the tube out of Jack’s arm. The doctor grunted from the sharp pain. Mandy didn’t understand much of what was going on. “Sun, what are you doing?”

“He’s given him enough,” the Korean said seriously.

“The blood still won’t save him?” Mandy asked Jack.

Jack didn’t answer her. He walked out over the tent and looked around. Hurley up upon seeing him. The doctor walked over to him and nearly tripped. The large man helped him catch his footing. “Whoa, dude. You alright, man?” Hurley, “ You're looking kind of goth.”

“Hurley, where is Micheal?”

“The beach, I think.”

“I need you to get him.” Jack ordered.

“What for?”

“JUST DO IT!”

Hurley raised his hands in protest and immediately exited the caves. McKay stood up, hearing the alarm in Jack’s voice. “What is going on?” asked the Australian.

“I’m gonna need your help moving him.” Jack pointed to the bald man.

“What?” McKay blinked, “Move him where?”

Jack walked back over to the table and began to remove it’s straps. He was going to use it as a makeshift gurney. McKay stood by, waiting for Jack to say something.

Almost in twenty minutes, Micheal had arrived with Hurley. Jack motioned for the black man to follow him to a compartment container. He then started to help Jack throw all of the boxes out of it. “Did Hurley fill you in?” Jack asked.

“You're saying Locked lied?” the black man said in massive confusion.

“Okay, Jack, wait. The cargo container? We've got to do this? What about the axe?”

“The axe isn’t going to work.”

“What axe? What is going on, Jack?” McKay demanded.

“What are you guys doing?” Mandy asked.

“The right leg is filling with blood.” Jack said, picking up a nearby log and placed it under the cargo container, “If I don't stop it I won't be able to save him.”

“You don’t mean . . .” Sun was shocked.

“The leg is dead.” The doctor said coldly.

Jack then slammed the cargo container door down on the log, smashing it easily. McKay tried to keep from hyperventilating; knowing full well that Jack means to chop off Boone’s leg. The reason he chose the cargo container was that it would chop off Boone’s leg in one swift motion.

The very thought of it was chilling McKay to the bone.

“There is no other choice,” Jack sighed.

----------------------------------------,

In the jungle, the group waited patiently for something to happen. Charlie sat quietly with Jin by the fire. In the distance, Kate had covered Claire’s legs with the beach down. Tony braced himself as her pillow cause she would be needing to lean up during the pushing. The brunette watched the blind doctor. He had his fingers on Claire’s neck and had his watch pressed into his ear. He was feeling for her heart beat and listening to the hands of his watch tick. “Heart rate is increasing,” he said, “It’s time to push, Claire.”

“Claire, you heard him, honey, it’s time to push.” Kate assured her.

The Australian woman gritted her teeth. Her face was turning red. Tony didn’t hear her breathing. “Claire, getting ready to push and don’t forget to breathe.” He told her.

Claire then started to hold her breath.

“Claire, no, no, no,” Kate tapped her, “You can’t hold your breath, you need to push and breathe.”

Claire fought to get up, trying to struggle out of Tony’s grip. “CLAIRE, NO!” He screamed, “You can’t stop this, honey. The baby is coming, right now, not later. So, please, you need to push.”

“IT’S NOT GOING TO WANT ME!!” she screamed.

“What?” Tony said in disbelief.

“It knows I don't want it . . .that I was going to give it away.” The young woman cried,” Babies know that stuff.”

Tony couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The situation was going downhill fast. Claire just confessed she didn’t want the baby and she picked the wrong time to be feeling the guilt. “Do you want this baby now?” Kate asked.

Claire looked at her.

“DO YOU WANT THIS BABY NOW?” she repeated in a higher tone.

“Well, the baby knows that too. Isn’t that right, Tony?” the brunette sighed.

“That’s right, “ Tony said, going with it,” You are not alone in this, Claire. We are all here for you. The baby knows you want it to be happy and healthy, okay?”

The blind doctor felt her nodding her head.

“Now, please, Push, big one!” Tony begged.

Claire screamed as she started to push. “Good, good, one more.” The blind doctor assured her.

The pregnant Australian screamed again. Charlie made a move to get up to go to her but Jin stopped him. The Korean just smiled, telling him to let Tony and Kate handle it. The short musician slowly sat back down, shaking his head. “Kate, do you see the head yet?” Tony asked.

“Not yet,” she wiped her forehead of sweat.

---------------------------------------------,

“ARE YOU SURE THIS GONNA WORK?” McKay screamed as they moved Boone toward the cargo container.

As they did, Boone coughed. Mandy covered his mouth with a cloth. As she pulled it away, she saw the blood soaked into it. Her hands trembled. “Jack, this isn’t going to work!” Sun told him.

“Yes, it will!” Jack said, as he and McKay sat him down, “I’ll tie a tourniquet around his leg and then get it off.”

“Jack, he’s bleeding inside.” Mandy cried.

“He’s gonna make it, Mandy!” the doctor replied.

“Jack, he’s too far gone!” Sun replied, “You can’t save him.”

“DON’T TELL ME WHAT I CAN’T DO!!” Jack screamed in her face.

Sun looked disgusted and walked away. McKay looked back at Jack then back to Mandy. He wanted Boone to live more than anything but it was beginning to see that he wouldn’t. “Mandy,” he walked over to her.

Mandy felt like she was going to faint. Taylor came up and held onto her. McKay looked her directly in the eyes. “I don’t think he is gonna make it, honey,” he whispered.

“Jack, said . . Jack said if he took the leg . .” she wept.

“How long before you think he bleeds to death anyway?” the Australian said with tears flowing down his eyes, “Remember what Tony had to do to seal his eye? How will he do that for Boone’s leg?”

“I can do this!” Jack said, “I CAN SAVE HIM!”

Mandy felt like she was going to puke. She didn’t want to admit; every fiber of her being wanted Boone to live but she knew McKay was right. How would Jack keep him from bleeding to death more than he was at the moment? “Jack . .” she said with trembling lips, “Please . . .please don’t . . .”

Jack grabbed the handle and got ready to slam it down.
