Part 160: When it Rains . . . .
Jack was checking branches. He wasn’t sure what to use about the needle to puncture a blood vein that he needed. Mandy was allowed to approach Boone. She stayed by his side, gently rubbing his head. He would whisper to her off and on how much he was sorry and how much he loved her. Her reply came in the form of a simply kiss to his forehead. “Damn it!” Jack threw the branches.
Charlie then stumbled back in with McKay in tow. The Australian dropped to his knees, panting for breath. “We found an A.” Charlie said, looking at his pad.
“Positive or Negative?” asked Tony.
“She doesn't know. I also found 2 B positives and 1 AB negative. At least, he thinks so.”
“Did you find any O negative?” Jack asked.
“I thought McKay said A positive?” Charlie gulped.
“I did say that!” he grunted, getting on his feet.
“Where is Sun?” Jack demanded, “I sent her to help you guys!”
“She ran past us onto the way to the beach, she said she was getting something.”
“Charlie, did you only ask 4 people?” Tony said, turning around from Boone.
“I asked the whole sodding camp!” the short musician retorted,” No one knows their blood type. I don't know my bloody blood type!”
“We’re gonna need an O Negative.” Jack muttered under his breath, trying to think.
Sun then finally came in the caves, holding a cooler with sloshing water. She quickly put it down, grabbing two halves of bamboo to reach into it. “Where were you?” asked Jack.
“Getting you this,” she said, pulling out a spiny sea urchin.
Jack looked at the object with curiousity. Sun quickly broke off one of the spines and handed it to the doctor. “A hard needle sharp enough to pierce a wet noodle.” She pointed.
Jack quickly tried it, poking his finger. Blood immediately oozed out, a small drip coming from the other end of the spine. He smiled, nearly breaking down in tears. “It’s perfect.” He sighed.
“Not to rain on your proverbial parade but I thought you said we needed someone who was A negative.” Charlie pointed out.
“Or an 0 Negative.” Jack said, grabbing some tubing.
“Right and judging by your tantrum, no one is.” McKay pointed out.
“Someone is,” the doctor, said tying the tubing around his arm, making a turniket.
“You?” Charlie said, “You’re an O negative?”
Tony then realized what he was going to do. He quickly turned around, from holding the wounds. “JACK, NO!” the blind doctor said, “It’s too big a risk!”
“We don’t have a choice, Tony.”
“Tony, what is going on?” Mandy asked, tears streaming down her face.
“Jack is going to pump O Negative blood into Boone, “ the blind doctor said with gritted teeth, “But it’s not an exact match. It’s been known to be in the range of A negative but it’s not the same.”
“What would that do?” McKay said, listening it.
“It may send Boone into anaphylactic shock . . ..stopping his heart.”
“You . . .mean . .it might kill him?” Mandy choked.
Jack quickly walked over to her, taking her by the elbow. “He is NOT going to die.”
“Sun, I need another one of those spines.” Tony asked.
The Korean woman gave it to him. He then removed his blindfold again and bent down toward Boone’s right arm. He quickly felt of a vein and inserted the spine into. Jack had already inserted the other spine into his own arm. Tony turned around and connected the tubing from Jack’s arm and then inserted it into Boone’s arm. The other doctor then started to make a fist and then let it go, making a fist again. The blood started to flow from one arm into another. “This is a bad idea.” The blind doctor muttered.
“Bad ideas are all we got left, Tony.” Jack whispered.
There was a brief pause the chaos. Inside the makeshift tent, Tony took a deep breath, relaxing for a second. Jack pumped his own blood into Boone. Sun stood by Mandy, offering her comfort. She did her best not to cry but there was absolutely no way to stop now.
Tony then walked over to Boone’s chest, checking the sewing. It all remained intact and he wasn’t bleeding. He then walked over, feeling of the leg. Tony then stopped; the fracture left wrong. It felt like instead of a single break, it was multiple breaks. “This fracture feels wrong.” Tony said.
“What do you mean?” Jack asked.
“It almost feels like it’s broken in several places, not a standard break.”
“Locke said he fell and broke it leg. That type of break is standard.”
“It also feels warmer than normal.” Tony mentioned, touching the leg.
“Tony, please,” the doctor said, “It’s a broken leg! We got that part taken care of!”
“I know that, Jack but maybe you should feel-“
“JACK, JACK!” Jin screamed, “DOCTOR, JACK!”
Tony turned and looked toward the direction of the Korean man. He quickly stumbled into the tent. He froze the moment he saw his wife. Sun was also frozen, not expecting to even see her husband after their incident. Jin then began to speak something in his native language that ended in Claire. “Claire?” Charlie gulped, “What about Claire?”
Jin continued to speak. Sun gasped and then translated, “He says Claire's with Kate. She's in labor.”
“Claire's having the baby?” Charlie squealed.
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” Tony bellowed in disbelief.
“Where is she?” the short musician added.
“Doe she know how fast the contractions are?” Jack asked.
Sun asked the question and then translated, “He says he thinks she's okay, but she's in pain.”
“Is she nauseous? Can she stand? Is there any bleeding? Did her water break?”
Sun asked and translated, “No, none of that, but she can't move.”
“We should go.” Charlie coughed,” What do we need, towels, bandages, hot water? Wait . . how in hell do we take hot water?”
“It’s all hot already, Charlie,” Tony said, tying his blindfold back. He knew what was coming.
Jack slowly looked at him, “How many babies have you delivered, Tony?”
“In my military career? Five. Not a single one by an American woman, “ he joked, “So I got this covered.”
“Tony’s going to deliver the baby?” Charlie said in disbelief,” I don’t mean to be cruel but he’s sodding blind!”
“Then let’s hope, Kate follows orders well,” The blind doctor shifted over to Mandy, “Jack’s got it from here, Honey. I will be back when I can.”
“Okay, Tony, “ she whispered.
“Sun, I need you to tell your husband where to take me, “ the blind doctor shifted over, “Charlie, grab all the supplies you mentioned.”
Sun told Jin was to do. The Korean man then took Tony by the arm and began to lead him out of the caves. Charlie was right behind him, arms carrying towel, diapers and water bottles that had been sitting in the rays of the sun. “Tony!” Jack called.
“YO!” He turned around.
“Please . . .get that baby into his world.” The doctor pleaded.
“I won’t let you down, Jack,” Tony pointed in his direction, “Do what you can.”
The three men disappeared into the jungle. Jack sighed, worried that no one problems would arise as of that moment, not one life was in their hands; but two.
Charlie then stumbled back in with McKay in tow. The Australian dropped to his knees, panting for breath. “We found an A.” Charlie said, looking at his pad.
