Part 117: Day Trip
Tony sat down in the sand, twirling his cane. He tried to remember where he had seen Sayid before. He was very certain his voice at least was familiar. But why could he remember his voice and his name but not his face? It didn’t make any sense. Then he felt a soft hand touch his shoulder and Marita sat down next to him. “Penny for your thoughts?” she asked.
“For everybody else they are a penny,” he smiled, “For you? They are free.”
“What are you thinking about, Tony?”
“Sayid. I am almost certain I have met him before.”
“Really? Any idea where?”
“That’s just it, I can’t for the life of me figure it out. Maybe I should talk with him?”
“You want me to go fetch him for you?”
Tony turned to her, “Would you do that for me?”
She leaned over and kissed him. Tony enjoyed the feel of her lips against his. She gently stroked his cheek, “There isn’t much left that I wouldn’t do for you, Tony.”
“When we get off this island . . .we’ll have to explore that.”
“You bet your ass we will.” She said, playfully messing up his hair as she stood up.
“Marita?” he asked, as she was walking away, “Where is Eddie?”
“About 15 feet in front of you,” she giggled, “He’s building a Sand castle with Mr. Kangaroo.”
Tony smiled knowing that Eddie was having a good time. He feared for his missing parents, assuming the worst. If they hadn’t found them by now, he was fairly certain they would never find him. Once more, Eddie was in denial, just like when he was back at the other side of the island, and latched onto Tony. He did mind at first but at that moment, he had grown to love the boy as if he was his own son. He did his best to imagine what Eddie looked like and how he was building his sand castle. “I wish I could see it.” He whispered under his breath.
“HEY, MONY!” Seth screamed with his mouth full, “MEY MOT MOOTH PASTE!”
“That’s great, Seth,” Tony chuckled.
Elsewhere, McKay was walking back to the beach, holding up his knapsack. Since they decided to stay at the beach, he would definitely need his gear. It only made sense; they had been living at the beach the whole time plus there were more people there. McKay hoped to make even more friends and build a community. It would make the stay even more easy.
The Australian paused when he heard a ruckus. He turned and in the distance saw Sawyer grunting in a mud puddle. He walked a little closer and then Kate had joined him as he got up. They both started walking back toward the beach, all the while Sawyer was mentioning something about being attacked by a boar from behind like a coward. It even stole his tarp. McKay couldn’t help but chuckle. In his opinion, it couldn’t have happened to a better person.
McKay walked along the beach, waving to the people that were already there. A few even stopped by, introducing themselves and also giving him fruit. He was amazed at the hospitality of the people from the front half of the plane. If they were going to be rude or otherwise, he would have figured it would happen by now. Perhaps new people visiting them was just what they needed?
McKay would up at the section of the tent that belonged to him, Taylor and Mandy. Mandy was leaning on her side, lost in thought. The Australian could take a wild guess who she was thinking about. Taylor was reading a People magazine. “Where did you get that?” he asked.
“That nice old person gave it to me.” She pointed in the distance.
“Well, it seemed with the exception of Sawyer, everybody is nice here.”
“Don’t let him get you upset, hon. It’s not the first time I’ve had men eyeballing my body.” Taylor smiled.
McKay leaned down on his knees, “True but I wasn’t with you then.”
The two lovers shared a brief smile in the rays of the sun. Taylor then blinked with she saw activity out in the distance. Charlie and the big guy Hurley were going through the motions of burying Ethan. “Why are they bothering to bury him?” she asked, “Why not burn him?”
McKay turned then looked back to her, “Perhaps . .because Ethan . .is BURNING already?”
Taylor shrugged her shoulders. McKay looked back at them noticing that Hurley was helping him to dig the grave. However, they only had makeshift shovels to do the job. The Australian reached in his knapsack and pulled out his fold-out shovel. He then began to walk toward them. Taylor smiled at his kind nature.
McKay walked down the beach and arrived at the section where they chose to bury him. When they noticed his presence, they paused in their digging and looked at him. “Can we help you with something?” Charlie asked.
“Actually, that was going to be my question.” McKay said, “I’d be more than happy to help you guys dig his grave.”
“Thanks, man, we really go-“ Hurley was about to say.
“THANKS!” Charlie interrupted him, “Thanks . . .we got it.”
McKay looked at him. For a brief second, he had seen a blankness in Charlie’s eyes. Rarely did he see anybody devoid of emotion. Hurley sighed and continued digging. McKay then tapped Hurley on the back. The large man turned around to see McKay offering him his shovel. “Take it,” he said, “You’ll get done quicker.”
“Thanks, dude,” Hurley said, taking his gift.
McKay stood up and walked away, hearing Hurley complain to Charlie that he was acting strange and rude around a man who only wanted to help. Charlie replied with a simple shut up and they started digging. The Australian couldn’t help but scratch his head. He wondered why Charlie was reacting in such a way. Did it come from him killing Ethan?
Tony sipped on his water and Eddie was by his side, eating some bananas. Then the blind doctor heard a person coming up to him. He was already able to hear the heart beat and smell the unique odor given by this man. “Hello, Sayid.” He smiled.
The foreigner kneeled down beside him. “Are you sure you’re blind?” he chuckled.
“Very sure.” The blind man smiled.
“He’s Daredevil.” Eddie mentioned.
“Truly,” Sayid grinned, “Anyway, Tony, Marita said you wished to speak to me?”
“Yes, Sayid, is . . .Sayid a common name in Iraq?”
“Not as common. Why?”
“Have we met before? I can’t shake the feeling that we have.”
Sayid bent his eyebrows in, “I am certain . ..I would have remembered.”
“True. I wish I had my sight so I could see your face to make sure I knew what I was talking about.”
Sayid then got his knees looking at the man. He was studying his face. Even he had to admit he was somewhat familiar looking. “Tony?” he whispered, “By any chance . ..are you a soldier or were one at some point in time?”
“Yes. I was a Medical Officer, Sergeant Rank.”
“Did you fight in the Gulf War?”
Tony smiled, “Only once or twice. My main job was to keep the other soldiers alive. I never really did any real combat till after the Gulf War.”
“During the Gulf War, were you . .were you . .”
“Sayid!” Hurley called from the beach.
“Yes?” he asked.
“Can I chat with you a sec, dude?” asked the large man.
“Excuse me, Tony,” he said, patting him on the shoulder.
“Sure thing.” Tony sighed.
Tony took a deep breath, and then sigh. He wondered what Sayid was about to say until he needed to speak to Hurley. The large man was expressing concern over his friend Charlie and how he had been acting since he killed Ethan. He even mentioned Gulf War Syndrome and when Sayid said it was for the other side, the blind doctor couldn’t help but chuckle. After their conversation was over, Sayid came back, kneeling toward Tony. “My apologizes, Tony,” he said, “But it would seem Charlie is in need of some counseling. We’ll continue our conversation later, okay?”
“Sure thing,” he said, shaking his hand, “Go take care of your friend.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------,
Mia, Shanna and Seth were hanging out at their section of the tent. Seth was busy writing in his journal, thinking of song lyrics. Shanna was breezing through the trivia calendar they kept. Mia was reading through Brendon’s journal, gently rubbing the Jade Buddha around her neck. She only wished she had gotten to know him even better than she was able to. Perhaps that was the reason he wanted to make sure they knew it existed was so they could learn more about him. She was no longer upset over his death but she still did miss him. Mia paused as a shadow blocked out the sun from her eyes. She looked up to find the smiling form of Kate standing before her, wearing a backpack. “Hey, guys.” She grinned.
“Hey, Kate,” Mia smiled, “How are you?”
“Just fine, I was wanting to know if you wanted to go have some fun?”
“What kinda fun?” asked Shanna.
“About twenty minutes ago, Sawyer was attacked by a boar.”
“Cecil attacked Sawyer?” Seth asked.
“Huh?” Kate blinked.
“There is a boar out there named Cecil?” asked Shanna.
Mia giggled over their personal joke, getting one up on Kate. The brunette smirked, placing her hands on her hips. “Why do I get the feeling I am the victim of an inside joke?” she grinned.
“Sorry, Kate.,” Seth smiled, “We couldn’t resist. Anyway, what is this about fun and Sawyer getting attacked by a boar?”
“Well, he is under the impression that he can track it and kill it. However, I know better. I am going to follow him, and lead him to the boar. I was wanting to know if you guys wanted to come? Kinda like a camping trip for us to get to know each other.”
“Hey, that sounds cool,” Seth smiled, “You can show us the lay of the land.”
“Yeah, why not?” Shanna laughed, “I’m probably going to get bored here anyway.”
Before Mia could answer, she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. She looked in the distance and saw Mr. Locke gathering up his equipment, making sure his water bottles were full. She wanted to talk to him and at the moment, he was alone; perfect time to speak with him. “You guys go ahead, “she said, patting Shanna on the shoulder, “I got something else I need to go do.”
“Okay, Mia,” the red head saw her friend running into the distance.
Seth and Shanna grabbed their gear, and put on the backpacks. Seth stuffed his sword into the corners of his backpack like he did before. Shanna was still holding her sword belt, using it for the blade given to her by the twins. The moment they were ready, Kate led the way. Shanna smiled, skipping slightly. It made her happy to get to know new people; like a fresh infusion of spirit to perk them up. Seth had another reason. He wanted to get to know Kate a little bit more.
And find out hopefully where he had seen her before.
“For everybody else they are a penny,” he smiled, “For you? They are free.”
