Part 21: McKay's Past

McKay and John hiked through the glades of the jungle. It was just as beautiful as John imagined it. He had never been to an actual jungle but he had hiked through many woods in his time. He and Ramon even spent a few weeks traveling the Grand Canyon. What a time that was. The thoughts of Ramon then brought back his conversation to Tony, and how the doctor was able to help him let go of the resentment he had for his dead friend. It’s true, he really wasn’t a friend to him but he decided to focus on the good times they shared, nothing else. It felt like a great weight had been lifted off his shoulders. “Hello?” McKay mentioned, “Earth to John?”

“Huh? What?” stammered John.

“Geez, John. You must have been thinking of something deep. Sorry to break you train of thought.”

“No problem. I was just thinking about Ramon.”

“I am sorry for what happened to your friend, John.”

“I wished he didn’t die like this. There was so many things I wished I could have told him, should have told him. But in the end, I am at peace with what has happened.”

“Fair enough.” McKay said, chopping a branch out of his way.

“So tell me about yourself, McKay.” John smiled, “What did you do in the Outback?”

“What all men like me-self do in the Outback.” He chuckled, “We’re guides.”

“Interesting. You been a guide your whole life?”

“Not really. Me paw taught me all I needed to know but I also had to make me ma brought of me too. So I went to college and became an English teacher.”

“English Teacher?” John laughed, “That explains why your accent is barely there. You gave it up?”

“Yeah.” He grunted, shoving a branch out of a way.

“Mind if I ask why?”

McKay stopped. He took a deep breath and slammed his machete into a nearby tree. Pulling out his canteen, he took a swig and swallowed it down. After he caught his breath, he looked to John. “I had an affair with a student.” He sighed.

“Whoa, “ John said, thrown back.

“You’ve never been a teacher to high school kids, John, “ McKay sighed, “You don’t know how they react. They are full of hormones.”

“I suppose so. What happened?”

“Kept this girl in detention. She had been in trouble many times, talking to students when she wasn’t supposed to, talking back to teachers, the works. It was just me and her, the school had been near empty for an hour. She starts to come to me, and begins undressing. She was at the tender age of 17.”

“You had sex with her?”

McKay kneeled down and rubbed his eyes. “I was lonely. My girlfriend had left me 8 months before. The need to be with someone was overwhelming. I was so stupid to think it would last.”

“What would last? The student?”

“Yeah.” The Australian stood up, picking up his machete, “We did it a few more times, always hiding. I realized it had to stop when she started sleeping with other teaches.”

“Aw, man, “John said in disbelief.

“The moment I said it was over, she exposed me. Said I forced her into it.”

“The School fire you?”

“No, I quit. I knew they were gonna fire me anyway. It didn’t matter about her saying I forced her into it, the truth was I did have sex with her. From then on out, I vowed I would only date girls above the age of 26.”

“How old are you?” John smirked.

McKay laughed and turned around. “Why, John? You got someone in mind for me?”

“There are a lot of lonely women on that beach.” The archer laughed.

“Mate, you are sick,” McKay said, continuing forward, “And to answer your question, I am 33.”

“Holy,” John laughed, “We’re the same age.”

“Life’s full of coincidences.” The Australian huffed.

As they continued forward, McKay then paused. He reeled from a stench coming from somewhere. John smelled it too. He held his nose trying to block the smell. “What is that?” the archer squeaked through his pinched nose.

McKay tore down another bush and they managed to make it to a clearing. Three feet to their left was a pile of stinking excrement. Both the men held their nose as they looked it. It was smelly, with a slight amount of bugs flying around it. John turned around, unable to look at it anymore. “Poteet been out here?” John asked.

“The man is big but I don’t think he could have left that.” McKay mentioned.

“Then what did?”

“That’s what worries me, Mate. I don’t think the boar could have left that here either.”

John looked to his friend with a concerned look. The Australian turned to John and spoke his mind. “There are other animals here than just boar.”
