Part 15: Day 3 on the Island

Eddie slowly opened his eyes. He saw the ceiling which consisted of blue tarp. What he used for a pillow was Tony’s shoulder. Little Eddie leaned up, massaging his neck. It was too bad he didn’t find an actual pillow among the wreckage. Over on Tony’s other shoulder was Marita. The little boy smiled at the prospect that she and the blind doctor seemed to be getting closer. He missed his parents but he knew Tony and Marita would take care of him. He just knew.

Eddie slowly stepped out of the tent. The sun wasn’t fully up yet. Everybody was still fast asleep. The embers of the campfire floated into the morning sky. McKay was asleep, using his nap sack as a pillow. Yolanda had found a suitcase for a pillow. John was just using piled up grass and sand. The little boy walked out among the beach. Everybody else was asleep too.

Eddie continued to walked toward the water. He had to go wee-wee and couldn’t think of any place else better. The water was cold as it hit his feet. After shivering for a second, he began to urinate. He giggled watching his urine disappear into the bubbling waters. His feet were washed into the water and taking back out by the tide. He remembered he used to hear his father tell him when he did this, his footprints would go out to sea. That story always made him laugh. As the tide came back in, Eddie was greeted by a smiling face.

The toy kangaroo looked up at Eddie, grinning. The little boy laughed as he picked up the stuff animal. He shook him loose of the excess water. “Did you go for a swim, Mr. Kangaroo?” the boy asked it.

The toy, of course, said nothing. It just grinned as Eddie held him. The little boy felt glad, feeling like he rescued the toy from the water. Then he looked down the length of the beach at the others items that appeared. The boy couldn’t stop laughing. The fact that the toy kangaroo appeared to him gave him the other logical reason he could think of for this stuff appearing.

Eddie ran back up to the beach. He ran as fast as his legs could take him. Once he got to the tent, he dove inside and began to shake his friends awake. “Mr. Tony! Mr. Tony! Wake up, Wake up!” he screamed.

“Uh, wha?” Tony said, leaning up. Marita naturally woke up with him.

“Mr. Tony, you got to come to the beach and get your present!” Eddie laughed.

“What?” Tony was still half asleep, “What present? What are you talking about?”

“Santa Claus has come! Look what he gave me!” Eddie said, holding out the Kangaroo.

Tony reached up and felt of the toy. He could tell it was extremely wet. “Where did you get this?”

“I was peeing at the water and then he just appeared.” Eddie laughed.

“What is he talking about?” Marita asked.

“Let’s go take a look, “ Tony sighed, “Pardon my pun.”

The half asleep friends followed Eddie out of the tent. The little boy didn’t hesitate to also wake up John, McKay and Yolanda. The Australian moved over in his nap sack. “Oh, for Gods sake, Eddie, “ he moaned, “Let me sleep.”

“You can’t! Or you won’t get your present!” Eddie warned.

McKay turned over to face him, “What present?”

Eddie pointed like a rigid statue toward the water. McKay stood up, joining his friends. Tony held onto Marita as she led him over to join the others. “John, what’s at the beach?” the blind doctor asked.

“Tons of stuff.” The man whispered, “Bunch of luggage, loose debris and three boxes I think.”

“Santa Claus delivered it!” Eddie pointed out.

John just playfully messed up the little boy’s hair at the prospect of what he was saying. The boy screamed for them to join him at the beach. The others began to walk down to the water as Eddie ran in front of them. “Poor Kid, “ John muttered, “I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was 12.”

“Let him hold onto his beliefs, John, “Tony whispered, “It’s all he has right now.”

“Yeah, Santa Claus me ass,” McKay pointed out, “This stuff is from the tail section of the plane.”

“Yeah, “ the blind doctor agreed, “It’s only natural that the undertow would bring up anything that floated to the surface, while it’s out there in the ocean.”

“Well, Mates, “ McKay laughed, clapping his hands, “Lets see what Santa brought us.”

The group began to salvage what they found on the beach. Tony sat down at the edge where the beached met the water as they searched. Yolanda picked up two bags and brought them back to the beach. Eddie picked up a coffee mug and an empty dinner tray. John hoisted up two suitcases and another garment bag. McKay swam out a little further and grabbed a floating plastic bag. He slung it over his shoulder and brought it back to the beach. He tore into it and then reeled back from the stench. “Aw, damn it!” he grunted.

“McKay!” John called, “What’s in that?”

“Nothing but garbage!” he said, going back into the water to retrieve something else.

“Not everyone can be a winner.” The man called back to him.

Eddie came back over to Tony. The blind man was started to tell who was who by the sound of their footsteps. Eddie’s was obviously more light than the others. “What did you find Eddie?”

“I found a dinner tray. A Time magazine, a shirt and two coffee cups, “ Eddie smiled, “We can use them to collect water.”

“Good thinking, boy.” Tony smiled.

“I’ll go get more stuff. Watch my Kangaroo, Tony.”

Eddie ran off to continue his salvage. Tony smirked, rubbing his chin. He wasn’t offended by the boy’s statement, he knew he didn’t mean anything by it. Obviously he couldn’t “watch” anything at the moment. Tony then wandered about Marita. She had gone into the ocean to find stuff. Then he heard someone walking up to him. “Find anything Marita?” he asked.

“The food packs must have been grouped together, “she said, dumping some stuff off, “I found three bottles of water floating out there. Along with a grouped packet of peanuts and pretzels. The bad news is I found a back of nachos and tea bags. But they were ruptured.”

“Too bad.” Tony whispered, “I am starting to get sick of peanuts.”

“Aren’t we all?” Marita stood up, “ I’m going to get some more stuff, Tony.”

“Cool.” He replied.

Marita walked a little ways, then stopped. She turned around to face the doctor, placing her hands on her hips. “Wait a second, Tony, “ she asked.

“What’s wrong?” he responded.

“How did you know it was me, when I walked up a second ago?”

Tony smiled for a second, then motioned for her to come to him. She walked over and leaned down. He motioned for her to come closer. She leaned in as he moved into whisper range. “When you start to sleep so close to someone, you can recognize their scent.” He said quietly.

“My scent?” she giggled.

“Yeah. A very fine exotic scent.”

“Why, doctor?” she grinned.” Are you flirting with me?”

All he replied with that statement was another grin. She gently rubbed his cheek, then kissed him on the forehead. Tony sighed as she started to walk back to the water to retrieve more stuff.

As the sun began to expand over the horizon, more and more people on the beach began to wake up. Others started to see what John, Tony and their friends were doing with the debris on the beach. Martin and Kristy were the first ones to join in. Mandy and Taylor soon joined in a well.

Perhaps it was a little like Christmas.
