Part 307: Boat Life

Kate slowly opened her eyes, as she felt a gentle hand touch her wrist. Tony was looking at his watch about one inch from his face, as he held onto. She smiled that he was still playing doctor. “Hello, Tony.” She smiled.

“Hello, Kate,” he said, putting her hand down, “How are you feeling?”

“Sore mostly. Other than that, I am okay.” She said, leaning up.

Kate paused for a moment to look at her bed companions. Seth was silently snoring away in his dreams, while Kellye was on her side in slumber. The fugitive smiled, gently moving the hair out of Seth’s forehead. “Are they okay too?” she asked.

“They’ll be fine. Like you, they just need rest.” Tony said, putting his glasses on.

“Tony . . .Jack told me about the bone marrow in my blood.” She whispered.

Tony slowly raised his head and turned to face her. “Did he, now?” he breathed, “What did Jack say?”

“He said that I should get a fever from the bone scraps when he reset my collarbone.” The brunette turned to her blind friend, “So, when can I expect that to set it?”

Tony rubbed his mouth, and took a deep breath. “Yesterday.” He muttered.

Kate’s eyes slowly went wider. “Excuse me?” she coughed.

“Bone marrow infection always happens at least one day after breakage. If you haven’t gotten a fever by now, then you won’t get one. Your collar bone was broke but Jack reset it immediately after that. Then the bruising held it in place to allow him to bandage you. You were just . . . .lucky.”

“Then . . .Jack . . .knew that too?” Kate asked.

“Yes, yes he did. He knew it, but he made up the story of the bone marrow infection to get you on this boat, Kate.”

“Why . ..why would he do that?” she started to get teary eyed.

“Because he wanted to give you every chance to escape. I don’t know . ..who will we run into out here or what authorities but we all love you, Kate. We don’t want to see you behind bars. If you got to run, then . . .you run.”

Kate closed her eyes and covered her face with her hands; as she began to weep. Tony patted her on the knee and then got up to find his way out, to leave her to her privacy. As he closed the door, Kate tried to wipe her tears away but all she could think about was Jack. He cared for her so much that he was giving her a chance to escape. The fact that she may never see him again, made her sick. She slid back down into the bed and then turned, letting her face fall on Seth’s shoulder. The young singer slowly opened his eyes, realizing she was crying. He didn’t know why but he placed his arm around her to hold her. Kate returned the gesture as she continued to cry into his chest. “It’ll be okay, Kate,” Seth whispered, “It’ll be okay.”

Inside the smallish kitchen, Marita had been frying fish the majority of the afternoon. It had been slightly difficult, cause the kitchen kept swaying in the ocean water. Sun passed her the salt as she was helping her prepare the fish. Marita liked the Korean woman. Circumstances didn’t really allow them to get to know one another but at that moment, aboard a boat of twenty people for who knows how long; the opportunity had finally arrived. After Marita prepared another place, she handed it out to Sun who handed it out to her husband Jin. The Korean man then turned around and gave the plate with the fork to Sawyer, who was relaxing on his recliner. “Thank you, Chewie.” He smiled, as he began to feast on the fish.

The group in the living area was enjoying eating and watching Spider Man 2. Joscelyn was leaning onto Hurley who was silently sleeping. He had seen Spider Man 2 already and it was making him bored enough to sleep. In the floor below the TV was everybody else. Chance was propped up against the recliner and Arizona was using him as a back rest. Mandy was munching on popcorn in front the TV who was sitting next to Alexander. She giggled every time she looked at him, cause he was mesmerized by the movie. The wild boy stared at the images with a gaping mouth. He stopped himself every time he realized he was drooling. Tony gently moved past them as the worked his way up to the back of the boat.

Tony climbed the stairs and reached the outside, smelling the salty air. He could hear the sound of voices from the various people who were camped out in the back of the boat. “Hey, Tony,” John called, “We’re over here.”

Tony walked over and reached out, finding one of the mounted chairs. He maneuvered himself in and then gently secured the seat belt. “How are they, Tony?” his archer friend asked.

“They are fine,” He said, crossing his arms to relax, “Kellye is resting comfortably. Jack and I were more worried about her neck, than her head. Seth is not moving much, which should let his scar heal. And Kate just found out that Jack lied about her prognosis to get her on the boat and to safety.”

“That’s Jack for ya,” Mia said, browsing through her notepad.

“So, Kate’s collarbone is broken?” John scratched his head, “Which one?”

“On her left side,” his blind friend replied.

“That’s . . .weird.” the archer said, leaning back.

Mia blinked for a second, then looked at him. “What’s weird about it?” she asked.

“It’s just . . .weird. Just reminded me of something. Just a random thought.”

“Okay,” Mia smiled, dismissing it as John talking to himself.

The boat’s engines then came to a halt as the boat started to glide to a stop, as much as boat’s do. Shanna then leaned up from her nap on her sleeping bag. She stared up to the blue sky with the sun gleaming above. “Why are we stopping?” she asked.

“McKay said he was going to stop us every day at 5 pm,” Tony mentioned, “To help conserve fuel.”

“So think of it, like us making camp.” Mia giggled.

“Yeah, camp out in the middle of nowhere.” The redheaded girl laughed.

“No, Nowhere was this Island,” Tony smiled, “This is Somewhere.”

The friends laughed at their personal joke. As the boat rested in the water for the evening, Dutch and Karleigh ran out of the cabin screaming. The young girl was in her bathing suit and Dutch in his trucks. They both took a laughing dive out of the boat, making a splash to caress the back end. “Hey!” Mia screamed, “Don’t swim too long out there!”

“Come on, Mia!” Karleigh beckoned, “A dip would do you good.”

“She’s right, “Tony called to them, “There is no telling what is in these waters. Fifteen minutes, no more.”

“Buzzkill!” Dutch screamed as he did a backstroke.

“Well, if they are taking a swim for fifteen minutes, “Adam said, taking off his shirt, “Mind if I join them?”

“Help yourself, Adam,” the blind doctor motioned.

The older salesman then stepped out and took a dive into the water. Marita then stepped out into the back of the boat, holding up a tray of cooked fish. She walked over to her immediate group of friends and sat it down in the middle. John, Mia, and Shanna picked the bits of fish, enjoying the taste. Tony helped himself to some fish, until he felt a hand touch his shoulder. “Tony,” Jenny gulped, “I need some more Tramamine.”

“No, Jenny, you can’t have another one till another three hours.” Tony chuckled, “Go lay down and try not to think about the ocean.”

“How can I NOT think about it?” she said, turning around to go back toward the cabin.

“Oh, my,” Marita smirked, “It’s gonna be a long trip.”
