Part 86: The Right Moment

The night had fallen on the beach. Everybody was enjoying the fruit given to them by the Red Faction. Tony didn’t know what type of citrus fruit he was eating but he relished in it. Marita enjoyed the break from coconuts, eating the bananas they gave them. McKay munched on some kind of fruit, he wasn’t sure what it was. “That has got to be the strangest thing I have ever done in my life, “ he muttered, “Serve as translator for a warrior boy who was born and bred on this island.”

“There were so many questions I had for him, “ Tony sipped his fruit, “But I didn’t want to push the matter. Not to mention there were a few he couldn’t answer.”

“Like what?” asked Martin.

“Like for instance, how did he and his comrades get so strong? Did Ethan experiment on them? This has all the indications of some sort of crazed scientist in some weird way, trying to create his own master race. But that kind of stuff is fiction.”

“Fiction, Tony?” John said, “I believe we can throw fiction to the wind. Otherwise we would have a reason for the Polliwog, or the whispering in the jungle.”

“Point taken, my friend, “ the blind doctor sighed, “None of the things we’ve come to believe about life, the universe, physics. . .that is practically CRAP here.”

“Yeah, that is for sure.” McKay muttered.

“So, when the times comes for us to be rescued, should we get those kids out of here?” asked Kristy.

“Actually, I would say no.” Tony said sternly.

“Why not, Tony?” Marita asked, “If we leave Red Faction here, they were surely die here.”

“Probably. But what we need to realize is that may be want they want. They have lived here their whole lives. If we take them out of their natural environment, there is no telling how they will react to the real world.”

“That’s a shame,” Mandy smirked, “I was kinda hoping to take Alexander home with me.”

Tony stopped, and smirked. Most of the girls then came into an abrupt laughter. John smiled, seeing how it was painfully obvious what the ladies of the beach thought about the buff young leader. “He did look like Brad Pitt from Troy, didn’t he?” giggled Jenny.

“OH MY GOD, I know!” Mandy said, slapping the hand of the young soccer.

Taylor laughed, funny that her best friend had become smitten with the young Tarzan of the island. McKay just raised his eyebrows, thinking it was funny. As they slowly stopped their laughter, Seth then raised his hands. John was kinda confused, why he would bother to raise his hand to speak. But he dismissed it; assume the young man was just trying to be polite. “Yeah, Seth, what is on your mind?” the archer asked.

“I just thought you guys should know that, that girl me and Brendon saw by the waterfall?” he coughed, “We met her today. Her name is Andra.”

“There was also something else that was interesting, “Brendon mentioned, “Eddie saw her when he was picking coconuts.”

“Is that true, Eddie?” Tony asked aloud.

“Yeah, when I saw her, I just thought she was one of us.” The little boy said with a mouth full of banana.

“She’s the one you saw from that day?” asked Marita.

“Mmm, hmm.” Eddie replied.

“Did you see her, Marita?” asked John.

“No, I didn’t. Eddie said he saw her and after that experience with the Ethan guy, I felt it best to just get back to the beach.”

“You did the right thing, Marita, “Tony patted her on the arm, “However, this does pose an interesting question. Why didn’t Andra tell Alexander about us?”

“Maybe she was afraid,” Brendon mentioned, “Seth and I discussed the same thing.”

Shanna then leaned forward, “Tony, is it true that since this Ethan guys takes the babies, they don’t allow sex so that they don’t have babies?”

“Yes, that is what he said,” the blind doctor responded, “Why do you ask, Shanna?”

“Well, . . .earlier today, one of the lost boys grabbed my butt. At first I thought he was just, you know, acting as if he didn’t know any better. But the sad look in his eyes . . .it reminded me of a lost puppy.”

“He probably didn’t have many girls to choose from and you seemed like a nice choice,” Seth playfully pushed her.

“My point is, after he did it, my friends Claire and Flower beat the tar outta him. At first I thought it was just cause he was rude; now I realize, it was because he was threatening the entire tribe.”

“Must be hard for them, “Taylor whispered, “They are coming at an age when their hormones might demand such things. Yet thanks to Ethan, they have resist it to save themselves.”

“It’s too hard for some of them,” Seth muttered, looking back at Cecil.

“What?” McKay asked, seeing as he looked at the old man.

“Nothing,” Seth said, throwing a banana peel into the fire.

There was a momentary wave of silence over them. Tony could easily hear it. It didn’t sound that anything they wanted to discuss right now, so he decided to ignore it. “Well, we’ve had enough excitement for one day,” the blind doctor smiled, “I, for one, need some rest.”

“I’ll second that,” McKay yawned.

The group then began to go their own ways, back to their little points in camp. As Mia started to walk away, she looked to John. He was taking off his shirt and replacing it with another one. She thought about walking over to him but changed her mind. She wanted to speak to him privately; not in front of a crowd. She started to walk back to the camp with Shanna.

John then looked up at Mia, watching her walk away. The archer was smitten with her exotic beauty. The wind blew at her, and her jet black hair flew up into the wind along with the ends of the blanket she had wrapped around her. McKay settled into his bed and looked up at his friend staring at Mia. “Mate, just bloody tell her how you feel.” He said.

“Shut up!” John retorted back.

“John, seriously, it’s painfully obvious she cares about you,” the Australian whispered, “What are you waiting for?”

“The right moment, “ John sat down.

McKay then started chuckling. John looked at him wondering what was so important. “My friend,” he said, turning over,” If you’re waiting for the right moment for any woman, than you have a long wait.”

John heard what he said. What was he afraid of? Would she reject him? He wasn’t sure. The age barrier bothered him but nowadays, that isn’t that big a deal.

Maybe McKay was right. Maybe he should go make the first move?

John leaned back and closed his eyes. He decided to sleep on it.
