Part 379: A Protector's Vow

May 8th, 2006

Alexander stood outside in the cool night. The trees around him swayed in the evening breeze. Crickets chirped their harmonies in the far distance of the woods. A frog leaped for safety in a distance neighbor’s yard, as a loose puppy chased it. The young man looked up into the trees and marveled at the lightning bugs as they flickered in the darkness. They did not have such creatures back on the Island. Alexander felt like he would burst from all the great things that the New World offered. New sensations, new foods, new friends. A world for him to explore.

He fully appreciated everything that McKay had done for him. The older man could have easily send Alexander to live on his own and learn the world on his own, but he took him under his wing and taught him many things. His English was still a little off but he had master several words. At the moment, he wasn’t going to focus on what was but what is. McKay and Taylor left for the evening, to enjoy privacy by themselves. Flower went over to Sayid and Shannon’s to spend the weekend with Andra. That left himself with Mandy and little Bridgett. The lost young man had grown to love the little girl like his own daughter. He hoped in some distance corner of God’s sky kingdom, that Boone didn’t mind that he was being a father to this wonderful little girl. “Alexander!” Mandy called to him from the doorway.

The blonde boy turned around and smiled at the young woman. She grinned and motioned for him to come in the house. He turned and did as she requested. Alexander loved her since the moment he first met her. There was something special about her; with her smile, her kindness and tender soul. She was not ready for him then but the young man was finding out he was an incredibly patient man. He stepped into the living room and Mandy was on the couch; patting the spot next to her. Alexander walked over and sat down next to her, putting his arm around her. She smiled, leaning into his shoulder and clicking on the remote to the DVD player. The young man smiled as it was Black Hawk Down, one of his favorite movies.

As the movie progressed, Alexander was only half fixated to the screen. He gently stroked Mandy’s back against the t-shirt that she was wearing. She was stroking his chest at the same time. He enjoyed these moments of cuddling but that was all they had. Still, he was okay with it. He would take her anyway he could get her.

The movie finally came to an end and Alexander was giddy like he always was. He enjoyed watching that movie, among many others. “Thank you, Mandy,” he smiled.

“For what?” she smiled.

“We had my favorite ice cream. And watch my favorite movie,” he giggled, “It’s been a very special night.”

“Yes, it is has been. I wanted you to know how much I appreciated you.”

Alexander then slowly looked at her. She was gazing up in his eyes a lot more sultry than normal. She gently bit her lip and looked down at his chest. “Take off your shirt.” She commanded.

Alexander looked at her for three seconds and then immediately pulled off his shirt. After he did, Mandy then started to rub his muscles. The young man was getting excited very quickly. “I’ve always watched you working out,” she smiled, “It made me feel warm inside.”

“Mandy . .” Alexander whispered her name.

“You’ve been very patient with me and I love you for it,” she said, moving closer to him, “There will always be a place in my heart for Boone. But I think . . .I think I am ready to love again.”

Alexander could have almost had a heart murmur when he heard her words. She then leaned forward and kissed him. The young man groaned at her touch; almost like a fire igniting in his brain. She held onto him, pulling him closer toward her. As they parted, she caught her breath; trying not to hyperventilate. Alexander was finding it difficult to breathe as well. “I . . asked . . .McKay and Taylor to leave us alone tonight,” she whispered, “I wanted you and me . . .to have . .privacy.”
Before the young man could say anything, Mandy took him by the hand and let him toward the stairs. Alexander watched her closely; studying the contours of her buttocks. As they entered the bed room, she gently let go of him and then proceeded to remove her t-shirt. She then gently removed her bra, letting it drop to the floor. Alexander could no longer stand it. He quickly closed the distance between then and grabbed her. Mandy gasped as he flipped her around and picked her up; immediately kissing her upper chest. “Oh, god, yes,” she moaned, “Take me, wild boy.”

Alexander kissed her heavily as they landed on the bed. Mandy gently bit onto his shoulder, then forced his pants off. The young man wanted her badly; he had wanted her since the moment she was kind to him back on the Island. She said she cared for him too but she was in mourning for Boone. Now after 2 years, she was finally ready to love again. Alexander vowed he would wait forever for her.

He was glad his patience paid off.

Mandy gently opened her eyes as she and Alexander were sleeping peacefully in her bed. The young man has his arm around her as she rested on his chest. The young blonde leaned up and gently stroked his smooth cheeks. She often wondered why he couldn’t grow facial hair; possible a result of his experimentation. There was so little he could tell her, simply because he didn’t have that knowledge. He had no idea who his parents were or if he was born on the Island or somewhere else. He was truly lost. She hoped that with them as a family; he had found his place.

The door opened down below. Mandy knew it cause she heard the house crinkle and crack so many times. McKay and Taylor had come back from their date night. She looked forward to telling her best friend all the fun details of her night with Alexander. The creaking of the stairs filled the outer room a little more loudly than normal. The young blonde was slightly upset; figuring that they would be more carefully than to accidentally wake the baby. Within seconds, the creaking had stopped and her door started to open. “Hey, Taylor!” Mandy whispered, “Go to bed! We’ll talk more in the morn-“

Mandy’s eyes when wide when it wasn’t her best friend but a man with a mask and a pistol.

He immediately fired at Mandy and a small dart struck her in the chest, making her yelp. Alexander then immediately woke up, only to have a dart slammed into his chest. He quickly grabbed Mandy and rolled both of them off the bed. The young warrior grunted as he landed on the floor with her on top of him. He swiftly slid her off and looked up. The masked man was baring down on them. The young man quickly sprang up and grabbed the intruder by the wrist. The older man fought back but he realized within seconds how much more strong Alexander was. “HEY!” he screamed, “I NEED HELP IN HERE!”

Another man came in and opened fire on Alexander’s back. The young boy grunted at the feel of three more darts hit in his back. Two more men came in and fired on him, making three more darts connect with his shoulder and neck. The man he was wrestling with then grabbed him by the face and tried to dig his index finger into the young man’s eyeball. Alexander then jolted back and slammed his forearm upward into the man’s elbow; snapping his arm and bending the elbow back about two inches the wrong way. “YEEEEARRRRGGGHHHH!!!” he screamed at the incredible pain.

Alexander then grabbed the man by his jacket and flung him toward the other two; making the intruders collapse in the hallway. The young man then ran over and grabbed Mandy by the arms; picking her up and running in her into the nearby bathroom. As he did he felt two more darts hit him in his side. He quickly ran into the large bathroom, slamming the door shut and locking it. Mandy collapsed near the toilet and pulled the dart out of her chest. “What . . .what is this?” she asked.

Alexander grunted as he started to pull the darts out of his own body. After he deposited them all in the sick, he grabbed his jogging pants he left on the bathroom floor. He stumbled over and checked on Mandy. She was leaning against the wall and looked like she was about to past out. “Tranquilizer. . . . something . . .feeling sleepy,” she started to cry.

Alexander felt nothing. The Dharma Initiative had transformed him into the pinnacle of human strength; which meant he was immune to certain poisons. Alexander heard them trying for force the lock for a few seconds but then stopped. He then crouched low and got ready to protect his love once they kicked in the door. However, that did not happen. He could hear the footsteps of the men proceeding elsewhere in the house. What alarmed him mostly was the soft whimper that began to turn into a cry. “Bridgett?” the young warrior said in disbelief.

“NO!” Mandy cried as she fought to stay awake, “Not . .not . . .not my baby . .”

Alexander turned to her and looked at her. The young blonde put her hands on his shoulders and tried to keep her eyes open. She then touched his cheek. “Alex . .” she whispered, “Remember . . .your . .promise . .don’t let them . . .take my baby . . “

“MANDY?” he said, as she past out.

He held her closely, slightly comforted that she was still breathing. He quickly grabbed a folded towel and placed it under her head as she laid on the bathroom floor. She reminded him of the promise he gave her back on the Island; that he would honor Boone by protecting the little girl. He leaned down and kissed her on the lips, as he got up to keep his promise. He quickly opened the door and ran out. He dogged into the hallway and looked in the baby’s room, clearly seeing she was missing. Alexander then turned around and started to storm down the stairs. By the time he reached the bottom, he could hear a car engine starting up and a vehicle screeching out of the drive way. He didn’t bother to open the living room door; he simple ran toward it and burst through it like baseball against paper. The wood splinters flung all over the porch as he jumped out onto the front lawn.

Alexander ran toward the car as it started to speed up the street. His super hearing could hear the occupants screaming at themselves. He could hear the crying of Bridgett and all it did was make him even more angry. The car was speeding up but Alexander stayed with it. He felt his feet hurting and his arms burning; however, he was not going to give up until he brought the child back to her mother. The voices of the masked men in the vehicle flooded his ears even though he was a good five feet from them.

“Speed up!”

“I AM speeding up!”

“Why is he gaining on us then?”

“I’m going 50 miles an hour, this is impossible!”

“YAAAAHHHHHH!!! OH MY GOD!!! YAAAAHHHH!!”

“Quiet, Larry!”

“MY ARM IS BROKE!!! YOU SHUT UP!!!”

“I can’t believe you idiots screwed this up! I can’t be seen!”

Alexander blinked at the sound of a female voice. He could only assume they brought a woman along to help coo the baby into a false sense of security. After he grunted for a second, he leaped up and grabbed onto the back of the hood of the four door vehicle. The lost warrior jolted up as the car started to swerve left and right; trying to shake him off. He then screamed in defiance as he leaned up and then flung his fist into the back windshield; cracking it. He delivered another punch and cracked it further. With his third punch, he shattered it. The masked men were screaming in amazement and fear.

Alexander then grabbed the windshield by the hinge and ripped it off completely. He could see one the woman holding onto Bridgett toward the right. The little child was screaming and holding her arms out to the young man whom she probably viewed like a father. One of the masked men, reached up to grab him and he in turn; grabbed him by the throat. The woman then turned to face Alexander by instinct and the young man froze when he recognized her.

It was Sabrina Rutherford; Shannon’s step mother and Bridgett’s biological grandmother.

The brief moment he hesitated after seeing her cost him dearly. The man in the front passenger seat swung around and held a shotgun toward the young boy. “NOOO!!!” Sabrina screamed.

Alexander jolted as the shotgun blast ripped into his chest. The blast flung him off the vehicle and he landed hard on the asphalt. He rolled and rolled, slamming onto a nearby parked vehicle; which caused his car alarm to go off. Various pedestrians and neighbors quickly ran out toward Alexander as he laid motionless against the back tire. An old black woman came too him and checked on him. She quickly rolled over and saw the open wound from the bottom half of his neck. “SOMEBODY CALL 911!!” she screamed, “This boy needs help!”

Alexander then opened his eyes and looked up at her. He then stood up abruptly. “Holy Jesus,” the woman whispered, not expecting him to be able to move to such an assault.

Alexander slowly stood up and looked at the road where the vehicle had gone to. He could not see it anywhere in sight. He didn’t focus on his pain; in fact, thanks to his unique metabolism, the blood had already stopped dripping around his chest. All he could focus on was the fact that he failed Mandy. However, perhaps it was something he could not handle alone. He slowly turned around and began to jog back toward the house. He wanted to make sure Mandy was okay and that McKay would have be informed about what happened.

And Shannon’s mother’s betrayal.
