Part 44: The Girl in the Waterfall

Seth wiped his sweat with his sleeve. It was probably not a good idea to wear the army jacket. The young man stopped, and pulled off his backpack. He then pulled of the green jacket and tied the sleeves around his waste. Brendon smiled through his sweat soaked face. “Perhaps you should have done that before we left.”

“I am a slow thinker.” He moaned.

Brendon held out a bottled water to him. The young man took it, and drank. He then poured a little on his back. Brendon in turn, sipped on his own water. “I keep expecting the Predator to jump out at any moment.” Seth chuckled.

“Not likely, “ his Asian friend smiled, “We are not armed.”

The two friends began their trek toward the water. The brushes were already broken, more than likely from McKay’s march the last time. The trees were tied with the strips of cloth like he promised, making the trail easier to follow. Seth wiped his sweat again. The silence was driving him crazy. “So, did you see Mia look at John?” he asked Brendon.

“What look?” the Asian asked.

“She was giving him goo-goo eyes. I think she has a crush on him.”

“I’m curious, Seth,” Brendon laughed,” Exactly what makes you think any of that is your business?”

“What? You don’t like to gossip?”

“Gossip?” the Asian amused, “I see. Forgive me. I was unaware we were back in High School.”

“Geez, you’re no fun.” Seth chuckled.

Seth paused when he heard Brendon had stopped walking. The young man turned around only to find his friend staring back at him. His face was a mixture of shock, disappointment and hate. Brendon then lowered his head, rubbing his mouth. “Brendon?” asked Seth.

“We should keep moving.” He said, all serious again.

“Dude, did I say something to offend you?”

“It’s not you,” the young Asian man sighed, “It’s just . ..that phrase you used, that I am not fun. It . . .reminded me of something.”

“Reminded you of what?” Seth was getting curious.

Brendon then pointed toward the distance, saying nothing. The young man scoffed and continued on. “That’s all I am gonna get, huh?” he grunted, “Fine. Just don’t expect me to tell you what I want to do with my life.”

“What does that mean?” Brendon asked.

“Remember this morning, when I said I worked in a Bookstore but . . Remember the Butt? I ain’t telling you now.”

“As you wish,” he smirked.

“You aren’t even the least bit curious?”

“Not really.” He chuckled.

“Man, I swear you-“

Seth then froze. Brendon paused at the sudden stop. Then his friend turned around to face him. He had a crazed look on his face. “I am seeing things,” he giggled, “John said I would see something strange and now I am seeing something strange. Dude, I think I am going insane.”

“Seth, what did you see?” Brendon asked.

“There is a naked girl in the waterfall,” he laughed, “I miss Tanya too much. I am seeing naked Waterfall Nymphs.”

Brendon then slapped him. Seth paused for a second, rubbing his cheek. “You finished?” the Asian asked.

“Yeah, thank, man.” Seth said, regaining his senses.

Brendon walked ahead of him, pushing the limps aside. He then froze as well. Down the quarry just as McKay said was a waterfall with a small lake. But Seth was not hallucinating. There was indeed a girl naked under the waterfall. Brendon then turned around and grabbed him, shoving him down. Before he could say anything, Brendon slammed his hand over Seth’s mouth. After making a motion to be quiet, the young Asian man slowly raised up and peered through the bushes.

The girl was very tanned and her hair was curly brown. Judging by the dirt she was removing from her, it looked like she hadn’t taken a bath in some time. Seth leaned up but he knew to whisper. “I wasn’t halluncinating?”

“No, my friend, “ Brendon whispered back.

“Who is it? How the hell did they beat us here?”

The girl turned around and rubbed the water over her head. Brendon was not concerned with her naked form but her face. A face he didn’t recognize. He grabbed Seth by the collar, lifting up his head to show him the girl. Seth blinked, realizing she wasn’t from the beach. “Who is she?” he whispered.

“She’s obviously not one of us.” Brendon whispered, crouching back down.

“Then where the hell did she come from?”

“I don’t know.”

“Maybe we should ask her.”

Brendon grabbed him, “That is the last thing we should do!”

“Why not?”

“We don’t know who she is and we don’t know if she is alone. There could be more of them. We have to tell Tony and the others before we do anything else.”

“What about the water?” Seth whispered.

“She can’t bathe forever,” Brendon whispered, assuming a cross legged position, “She’ll eventually leave.”

Then both men shut up as they heard the young girl beginning to sing. Brendon peered through the foliage hearing her sweet tunes. She was singing, and getting clothed. Brendon took notice it was a man’s shirt and torn pants. “La mer, Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs, A des reflets d'argent. La mer, Des reflets changeants. Sous la pluie. La mer. Au ciel d'. . .t. . . confound,” She sang.

“That’s French,” Seth whispered.

“Interesting,” Brendon noted.

The young girl kept singing as she began to walk away into the distance. The moment she was beyond their sight, Brendon and Seth made a mad dash to the waterfall. They took turns keeping an eye out for the girl while the other filled the water bottles. They moment they were done, they immediately ran back up the hill to get back to the others.

They had to tell them they were not alone on the island.
