Part 40: Day 8
The morning had arrived as it always did. The wind was kicking up small groups of dust particles. The fire flickered toward the left but remained burning anyway. McKay was starting to snore more and more as the days go by. Taylor gently opened her eyes to the Australian as the noise crept out of his lips. She gently hit him on the shoulder. He quietly coughed and stopped snoring. The young blonde smirked, as it seemed by accident they were already behaving like a married couple.
Inside the tent Marita moaned awake. Her neck was hurting from the sleeping on the beach. She figured she’d go for a swim to loosen her muscles. She leaned over and checked on Tony. She paused when she saw that he seemed to be resting peacefully for the first time in three days. Marita then felt of his head for a fever. He didn’t have one and his hair was soaked. Then the blind doctor slowly produced a smile. “Tony?” she said, seeing as he was awake.
“I’m sweating.” He chuckled.
“Your fever broke, didn’t it?” she smiled.
“The antibiotics are kicking in. I ain’t fully recovered but this is the right step. I just have to keep taking one every six hours. I’m . . .I’m gonna make it.”
“Oh, Tony” the Latina smiled, laying her head on his chest, “You don’t know how happy that makes me.”
Tony reached up and gently stroked her hair. She closed her eyes, enjoying the closeness they shared. “You saved my life, Marita,” he whispered,” I can’t see you but I will never forget it.”
“You are most welcome.” She said, embracing him.
“Can I tell you something personal?” he whispered.
“Sure.” She said, leaning in.
“I am . . . craving a taco like something fierce.”
Marita paused and once she got his joke. She laughed and rolled next to him. Tony was chuckling along with her. Then their laughter woke up little Eddie. The boy leaned up and looked at the playful couple. He was slightly confused by Tony’s chipper mood. Marita then tapped the blind man on the shoulder. “Eddie’s awake,” she told him.
“Hey, morning, buddy,” he smiled, “You sleep well?”
“Pretty much,” Eddie rubbed his eyes, “You okay now, Tony?”
“I don’t feel like a million bucks but I do feel like 80 dollars.”
Eddie laughed and hugged the blind man. Then Marita joined in for a group hug. Outside the entrance to the tent John leaned on the pole holding it up. He watched the little “makeshift” family play around with each other, celebrating Tony’s fever break. In fact, nothing pleased the archer more to see his friend on the way to recovery. However, there was something strange about Marita finding the antibiotics when she did and how she did.
John walked away from the encampment. He was looking for McKay and spotted him at the beach. He was walking in from the surf and dumping a fish onto trashcan. John looked close and saw that it had Dilbert on it. “Where the hell did you find that thing?” he said.
“The Nerd Box.” He replied.
“Why am I not surprised?” John sighed, “McKay, we need to talk.”
“About what?”
“What did you think of Marita’s story? About how she found the antibiotics?”
“A damn miracle is what I’d call it.”
“That is what is bothering me. We seemed to be having too many miracles.”
“First off we survived that plane crash, “ John pointed out, “A crash we should not have survived. Second, Ramon was in the tree and I wanted him out of that tree so bad, the next morning he clearly is. Third, we are eating all of our food to the point where we’ll run out in three days and then all of sudden supplies wash up on the beach. Fourth, Tony gets so sick to the point where he needs antibiotics and all of a sudden Marita discovered a lone suitcase hanging from a tree that happens to contain the best antibiotics money can by.”
“It’s coincidence,” McKay rubbed his nose, “You’re reading too much into it.”
“Okay, then lets go to the strange events. The big invisible monster. The polar bear who is way out of his environment. Hell, the damn whispering we heard.”
“Okay, granted that is all very weird,” McKay holding up his hands, “But what exactly are you getting at?”
“I think this island is more than just an island. There seems to be some weird things happening to the point where it seems it’s helping us.”
“I still think you are seeing more into than you should, “ McKay said, walking back into the ocean, “ There is an explanation for everything, including the strange stuff.”
“McKay, you just can’t ignore this!” John called.
“I can try, mate.” He replied, diving back into the ocean.
John scoffed and turned around. He began walking back up to the beach line. John wondered why McKay didn’t want to talk about the strange things happening. Everything from the giant monster to the missing man known as Ethan. None of it added up as it should have. John then stopped looking at the ground and looked up. Mia was staring at him, with her hands in her jean jacket. “Hey, Mia,” John smiled, “How are you doing?”
Mia looked at him and then away. Her face looked like she was terrified. “Mia, is something wrong?” John asked again.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Riggs, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.” She said.
John sighed. It was probably going to come out eventually. “Don’t worry about, me and McKay were just going over something,” John smiled, “And you can call me John. I am only 33, so I don’t think I’ve earned Mr. Riggs yet.”
She didn’t laugh at his joke. She walked closer to him. “Do you . ..think this island is cursed?” she asked.
John raised an eyebrow, “I didn’t say that. Why? Have you seen something?”
Mia looked back again at the encampments. As she turned back to John, she got even closer. “You mentioned whispering. I heard it too. Last night.”
“Where?”
“From the woods. It woke me up and I turned around to see what was making that sound . .and . . .”
“And what? Did you see something?”
“I saw three men. They looked like they were slightly older than me, maybe 23 or so. I thought I was hallucinating so I closed my eyes and laid back down. When I leaned back up, they were gone.”
John was starting to grow more and more worried. Other people already on this island?
“John . . . am I losing my mind?” the young Lakota woman asked.
“No, Mia,” John sighed, “The bad news is . ..you are not losing your mind. Something is very wrong with this island.”
