Part 32: Polar Bear Attack
McKay, Taylor and Mandy crashed through the jungle as fast as their legs would take them. The heavy weight of the water was hurting their backs but at that moment, it was the last thing on their minds. They were doing their best to not get mauled by a few thousands miles misplaced polar bear. McKay hacked through the foliage as fast as he could. “A damn polar bear!” he screamed in disbelief.
“This is the jungle, “ Taylor screamed, “What the hell is a polar bear doing here?”
“Well, I suppose I can ask him but I don’t think he’d give me a straight answer,” the Australian laughed in the face of danger.
The bear roared again. McKay turned around and saw the dirty white shape in the distance. The polar bear had temporarily lost them but he knew it would pick up their scent within seconds. They were hot and sweaty, giving off a smell any animal could track. McKay had to think of a plan to save them all or the others would never know about the water supply. “I need you to head that way.” He pointed toward the distance.
“What?” exclaimed Mandy, “Why?”
“You’re gonna offer him a brief distraction. Then I am going to force him to follow me.”
“You can’t be serious?” gasped Taylor.
“No time to debate about it, luv. It would be better if this thing didn’t kill all of us.”
“McKay,” the blonde whispered.
The polar bear roared in the distance of the jungle. It had found it’s prey. The giant beast then started crashing through the forest right toward them. There was no more time for hestitation. “GO, NOW!” McKay screamed.
Mandy and Taylor then started to run away from him. The Australian then jumped up onto a nearby tree. He balanced for a second, holding his machete out. As the giant bear ran toward the two girls, it would have to past by McKay. The white shape then collided with the tree and at that precise moment, he leaped down. The machete struck the ear of the polar bear, sending a small squirt of blood in the air. The displaced creature roared at the pain it had received. McKay landed on hard on the ground, got up and ran in the opposite direction.
His plan worked. The polar bear was smart enough to know McKay had caused it pain. It knocked over small trees and destroyed bushes as it pursued the Australian. Mandy and Taylor watched as McKay and the polar bear disappeared into the distance. They both gasped from their running. Taylor found herself starting to swell up in her throat, at the loss of a man she was just getting close to. “McKay,” she cried, holding her hands to her face.
McKay grunted as a branch ripped into his shirt. From the cries of pain from the beast chasing him, it was having the same problem. The man ran as fast as his legs could carry him. Branches and leaves collided with his face and he held up his arms to block it best he could. Ahead was a burst of sunlight. McKay continued to run toward the light.
He paused as he reached the beach. He thought he could lose the bear and then gather enough time to lure it back to the rock formation where they burned the bodies. McKay never realized how close he was to the encampments. Before the bear decided to attack them all, he had one last chance to stop it. He had to run toward the only guy with a weapon. The Australian then dodged the bear as it flew after him, and then slipping on the sand. McKay didn’t wait for the bear to regain his footing. He started running toward his own encampment. “JOOHHHHNNNN!” McKay screamed at the top of his lungs
John leaned up from his nap. He heard someone calling his name. He looked into the distance to see McKay being chased by a polar bear. The archer took a quick swipe of his eyes to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating. It was indeed a polar bear trying to eat his good friend. “JOHNNN!” McKay screamed, “SHOOOT ITTT!!!”
John threw off his blanket and grabbed the compound bow. Jabbing three arrows out of the quiver, he ran from the encampment to get room to fire. By now other survivors were running away from the approaching beast. Eddie held tightly onto Tony’s arm as he saw what was happening. “Eddie, what’s happening?” asked Tony.
“Mr. McKay is being chased by a polar bear!” he gasped.
“A WHAT?” Tony said in disbelief.
John pulled back the bow and fired. The arrow flew through the air and hit the bear on the back. It didn’t slowly down. McKay was almost drooling, he was running so fast. John knew he had to hit the bear in a vital area. He quickly waved for McKay to head to the other direction. The Australian quickly dove left and ran. The bear changed direction to give chase. John pulled back another arrow and fired. The sharp weapon struck the bear in the side of the rips, making it stop. The giant beast yelped at the pain it was being struck with. The archer didn’t hesitate. He pulled back and fired his third arrow. The bear yelped again as the third arrow penetrated it’s chest. Not use to that type of pain, it turned around and headed back into the jungle.
McKay gasped, coughed and gasped again. He saw the polar bear crash through the woods as it ran away in pain. The Australian closed his eyes. He was certain Tony was calling his name but all he could hear was the pounding of his heart and the fire burning in his lungs. He then dropped to his knees and collapsed.
“MCKAY!” Tony called to him. Eddie guided the blind doctor to his fallen comrade. He grabbed his friend and tried to tip him over. The backpack was resisting his attempts. As he managed to get the back off of him, he noticed it was extremely heavy. Tony could only think of one reason. He quickly shot his hand into the backpack and pulled out a water bottle.
He could tell by the weight that it had water in it. He quickly uncapped the bottle and felt for McKay’s mouth. Gently he let the liquid pour and McKay drank as much as he could. Marita quickly grabbed the backpack and started giving out bottles to the rest of the survivors. McKay coughed and leaned up. “Mission . . .” he wheezed, “ Accomplished.”
“Good job, mate,” Tony smiled.
“MCKAY!” Taylor screamed as she ran toward him, followed by Mandy.
Taylor and Mandy embraced the Australian. They cried as he held onto them. They were extremely grateful he was alive, considering he was willing to give up his life for theirs. Tony stood up, and turned his head toward the jungle. John looked back at him and then looked at the torn brush that the bear left behind as it fled into the jungle. “What the hell is going on?” whispered the archer.
